Description

Enliven your garden with The Rioja Spanish Bulb Collection. The Aztec Lily (Sprekelia formosissima) blooms first, with spectacular red petals (6-12” tall). Mexican Shell Flowers, or Tiger Flowers (Tigridia pavonia) have an exotic orchid-like pattern, and they create an extraordinary sweep of color from mid-to-late summer (12-18” tall). Tigridia’s flowers last just one day, but its continuous parade of blooms will keep you in color for several weeks. The stunning 'Nuit D'Ete' Dahlia will deliver the final display of burgundy petals blooming from early summer to frost (36” tall). Frequent deadheading encourages the production of more blooms, and the medium green foliage is typically pest and disease free. If these bulbs are not hardy in your zone, you can grow them as annuals, grow them in containers that can be brought indoors for cold seasons, or dig up bulbs before frost to store in a cool dry place for planting the following spring. Be sure to follow the appropriate planting depth for each unique bulb. Collection of 19 bulbs.

Planting & Care

Summer Blooming Bulbs, including popular varieties such as gladiolus and dahlias, are planted in the spring and bloom in the summer. Most of these bulbs are tropical and require warm weather to be planted. There must not be any danger of frost and your ground temperature must have reached 55 degrees Fahrenheit before planting. Many of our summer blooming bulbs can be planted as perennials in zones 9-10 (zone 8 if mulched), but should be treated as annuals in cooler climates. You can lift them and store them in the fall, or bring patio pots inside before frost.

As soon as your order is placed you will receive a confirmation email. You will receive a second email the day your order ships telling you how it has been sent. Some perennials are shipped as potted plants, some as perennial roots packed in peat.  The ‘Plant Information’ section describes how that item will ship. All perennials and fall-planted bulbs are packaged to withstand shipping and are fully-guaranteed. Please open upon receipt and follow the instructions included.

Perennials and fall-planted bulbs are shipped at the proper planting time for your Growing Zone. Perennial and fall-planted bulb orders will arrive separately from seeds. If your order requires more than one shipment and all items are shipping to the same address, there is no additional shipping charge.
