'Espresso' Gladiolus offers some of the darkest flowers available, with sultry deep crimson flowers surrounding pure white stamens. They’ll give a pop of color to a perennial bed awash in lavenders and pinks, or its deep red flowers will shine in front of an evergreen background. Description

When intense color is called for, 'Espresso' Gladiolus is your solution. Try them with Allium, Delphinium, Salvia, and grasses where their stately form will stand out. Gladiolus is an easy-to-grow garden staple that adds vertical interest with its flower spikes and strap-like green foliage. Blooming in mid-summer for about two weeks, it’s easy to enjoy them all season long. Just plant some bulbs every two weeks from the last frost until early summer and enjoy a non-stop season of bloom. Gladioli are easy-keepers, not heavy feeders, and moderate water users making them welcome additions to a water-thrifty garden. Well-drained soil is a must. Mass of bulbs using at least 12 corms per planting - they not only look better en masse, but they also support each other as they grow. Water well and water periodically as growth progresses. Native to southern Africa, Gladiolus is hardy in zones 8-10; in cooler zones, you can treat your Gladiolus as annuals, or you can dig the corms after frost, and store in a cool, dry, dark place to re-plant next spring.

Planting & Care

Summer Blooming Bulbs, including popular varieties such as gladiolus and dahlias, are planted in the spring and bloom in the summer. Most of these bulbs are tropical and require warm weather to be planted. There must not be any danger of frost and your ground temperature must have reached 55 degrees Fahrenheit before planting. Many
of our summer blooming bulbs can be planted as perennials in zones 9-10 (zone 8 if mulched), but should be treated as annuals in cooler climates. You can lift them and store them in the fall, or bring patio pots inside before frost. See page 15 of our Planting Guide for a bulb depth planting illustration.

Growing Gladiolus: After spring frosts are over, plant the gladiolus corms (bulbs) in your flower bed wherever you want brilliant color in mid-summer. Gladiolus take very little space in the garden and can easily be planted between other plants. After planting, keep the bulbs watered regularly. Soon you’ll have bright sword-like foliage and brilliant blooms. Gladiolus corms are inexpensive, and provide excellent color for the cost. As frost threatens, you can just forget them, and replace them with new bulbs next growing season, or dig up the corms and store them in a cool try place until the following spring.
