Description

42-54" tall x 24-30" wide (cutting propagated). Fill your garden with a big cloud of gorgeous, glowing lavender-purple flower spikes. 'Blue Blazes' is a large, vigorous hybrid that blooms non-stop from mid-summer into fall, attracting butterflies and hummingbirds with its nectar-rich flowers. While the plant takes two growing seasons to reach its full size, it blooms the first year from planting. Situate it in full sun with a well-drained soil. Pinching back the plant in late spring keeps it more compact. 'Blue Blazes' is an amazing hybrid between our own Agastache 'Desert Sunrise' (introduced in 2000) and the blue flowered eastern native Agastache foeniculatum. Bred by Kelly Grummons, owner of Timberline Gardens in Arvada, CO.

Planting & Care

Tips for growing Agastache

Agastache are sun loving plants with aromatic foliage and flowers. They bloom from mid-summer into early fall and are resistant to rabbits and deer.

Agastache need lean, well-drained soils, prefer gravel mulches, and appreciate deep but infrequent watering after their second growing season

  1. Provide a fast draining soil that's naturally low in fertility, Don't plant into clay soils.
  2. Plant in full hot sun.
  3. Just a few handfuls of compost in the planting hole is enough. Don't plant into a rich, highly amended soil..
  4. Fertilize the Agastache just once in fall with Yum Yum Mix.
  5. New transplants need regular irrigation their first growing season to establish themselves. Watering can be reduced greatly during the second growing season when the plants have matured.

To improve winter-hardiness, and encourage re-seeding, leave the stems intact over the winter. In mid-spring, remove old stems just above the new foliage, about 4 or 5 inches above ground level.

If your conditions don't lend themselves to growing Agastache in your garden, they do well planted in containers.

"Blue Blazes is the star of our mostly-native pollinator garden. It blooms for months, from mid-summer until the frost, and its height and color create a beautiful focus for the garden as other plants go in and out of bloom. Other than making sure it didn't dry out in its first summer, and cutting down overwintered stems just before spring, it has required no care from us for several years. Blooming first year

"Planted this in early spring and it's a loose 3x3 ft. With plenty of blooms in August. Hummingbirds have been visiting. My dog took out one of these soon after planting in early spring but it came back a month later so don't lose all hope if you have a canine catastrophe."

I can't stop buying!

"I have planted some in containers and some in the ground. Both have come up bigger and better each year. Im in central Massachusetts zone 5/6. The bees, butterflies and hummingbirds love these. They bloom from May until late September/early October. I highly recommend as they are a favorite with pollinators. They add color all season long. Will definitely be buying more!"

Holy Moly! Bees love it!

"Wow! This has been my quickest performing plant! The bees and butterflies LOVE air! It is lovely! The only problem, it's a bit bigger than the dimensions given. Said 42-54"" tall, mine is about 72""!! And for width it said 24-30"" wide, and it's about 65""!! It's nuts and so healthy. Did have a lot of hail this season, it survived but lost a big branch. I've started to tie it a bit because it's now in too small of a space and getting into sidewalk/stairs. I still love it, just have to figure out how to deal with its size appropriately. A more experienced gardener likely would not have put it where I did! Sooo many different types of bees are now enjoying it! Lots of the big fuzzy bumbles and the little babies too! Zone 5, has been planted about 10 months. Also, it made it through a very harsh winter."

Took off and taking over

"Took off and blooming like crazy in first year of planting. Planted in NYS on border between zone 5 and 6, but have tucked into a corner of a house addition at foundation that gets full morning and noon sun including a lot of reflected heat, and sheltered from rain and wind, and blended sand in with the heavy rich native soil. Bees found it no problem, seen bumblebees and honeybees both all over it."
