Made it easy

"As always, these plants are healthy on arrival. The selection of native plants for my region made it very easy to plant a garden that will nurture songbirds long after I'm gone. Be aware, though, that the plants are all very small, and they're mostly not fast growers. For example, the desert willow was only about 6"" tall on arrival. The next year it had grown a few inches, but not enough to double its height. I decided I wouldn't be around long enough to see it grow to its mature height, and bought a large one at a local nursery! Same thing with the western sand cherry. This was the third summer, and the garden is just starting to fill out. If you're in a hurry, this isn't the way to go. One thing I wish I'd done differently: amended the soil a little more. When I ordered I asked about amendments, and told the customer service rep that my front yard was just dirt, not good soil, and also that I needed to add some top soil to even it out. She said the plants are hardy natives and didn't want or need richer soil, just add some top soil where it was needed and some yum-yum mix when planting. I have a drip system for them, but I can't help but think they might grow a little faster if the soil was a little better."
