Monarda didyma 'Jacob Cline' (Bee Balm) is one of our most spectacular native Beebalm hybrids with heads of long tubular deep red flowers. Discovered in a Georgia garden, it has excellent mildew resistance and blooms for a month or so in mid-summer.

Description

36-48" tall x 36" wide. With its spectacularly large, deep-red flowers, vigorous growth habit and mildew-resistant foliage, Monarda didyma 'Jacob Cline' (Bee Balm) is a must for the perennial border. Planted into a compost-enriched soil with regular irrigation, this big boy will form impressive clumps that should be divided every 3rd year to keep it vigorous. Companion plant with Phlox paniculata 'David' for long-blooming summer color. (Cutting propagated.)

Tips for Growing Bee Balm

Bee Balm (Monarda) is a showy and vigorous old-fashioned garden perennial that blooms in summer. Bee Balm is, as the name suggests, “bee friendly,” deer resistant and will attract hummingbirds and butterflies to your garden. The varieties we carry are highly resistant to powdery mildew.

  • Plant Bee Balm in full sun (or part shade in hot summer climates).
  • This plant enjoys moist and fertile garden soil.
  • Mulch and water regularly. Water Bee Balm if rainfall is less than 1 inch per week.
  • Fertilize once annually in fall or spring with a top dressing mixture of Yum Yum Mix and compost.
  • Divide the plants in fall every few years to keep them vigorous.

If you have particularly challenging gardening conditions (hot humid summers, periodic drought, or cold winters--as low as USDA zone 4), we recommend planting Mondarda fistulosa which grow easily in most soil types, including clay. The cold hardy zone 4 varieties are excellent for fall planting.

BIG RED

"I have no freakin' clue why I decided to try and grow these out here. There's definitely not enough moisture here, but they seem to tolerate the climate as long as they're placed in part shade and get extra runoff, but they'll never form huge clumps. The inflorescences are the deepest bright red and are massive! About twice the size of a hummingbird."
