Scarcely reaching two feet tall and often remaining a bit shy of that, Smallhead Blazing Star (Liatris microcephala) is a little-known perennial originating in the Appalachian Mountains. These perennials are slow-growing and long-lived, developing from corms (bulb-like structures) that get larger and produce more stems with age. Starting the season as a tuft of long, dark green leaves, Smallhead Blazing Star greets late-summer with one- to two-foot green spikes covered in light-green buttons. While most perennials open their flowers from the bottom of a still-growing stalk upward, Liatris grow the entire flower stalk and then bloom from the top down, opening a few buttons each day to reveal fuzzy magenta flowers. This can make them particularly interesting in a vase, as can their very unique floral form. These butterfly favorites provide a strong show of late-season color for otherwise tired-looking perennial beds.
As soon as your order is placed you will receive a confirmation email. You will receive a second email the day your order ships telling you how it has been sent. Some perennials are shipped as potted plants, some as perennial roots packed in peat. The ‘Plant Information’ section describes how that item will ship. All perennials and fall-planted bulbs are packaged to withstand shipping and are fully-guaranteed. Please open upon receipt and follow the instructions included.
Perennials and fall-planted bulbs are shipped at the proper planting time for your Growing Zone. Perennial and fall-planted bulb orders will arrive separately from seeds.
