Description

Agastache 'Red Happiness' (Hummingbird Mint) has such beautifully colored red flowers, you just have to smile when you see them. Discovered by HCG founder David Salman, it’s a very cold hardy hummingbird mint that’s long blooming with nectar-rich flowers that are a favorite of the hummingbirds. The plant is deer and rabbit resistant with its strongly mint-scented foliage. If planted in zone 5 or 6 in fall, it should not be cut back. Mulch heavily to protect it from winter cold and wet conditions.

Planting & Care

Tips for growing Agastache

Agastache are sun loving plants with aromatic foliage and flowers. They bloom from mid-summer into early fall and are resistant to rabbits and deer.

Agastache need lean, well-drained soils, prefer gravel mulches, and appreciate deep but infrequent watering after their second growing season

  1. Provide a fast draining soil that's naturally low in fertility, Don't plant into clay soils.
  2. Plant in full hot sun.
  3. Just a few handfuls of compost in the planting hole is enough. Don't plant into a rich, highly amended soil..
  4. Fertilize the Agastache just once in fall with Yum Yum Mix.
  5. New transplants need regular irrigation their first growing season to establish themselves. Watering can be reduced greatly during the second growing season when the plants have matured.

To improve winter-hardiness, and encourage re-seeding, leave the stems intact over the winter. In mid-spring, remove old stems just above the new foliage, about 4 or 5 inches above ground level.

If your conditions don't lend themselves to growing Agastache in your garden, they do well planted in containers.

Fantastic for Hummingbirds

"As the description says 'does well in dry sunny locations'. I have sand and it thrives in it. I recommend it 5 stars because the hummingbirds adore it and are on it all the time during blooming. Even though each flower is small, it is lovely when in bloom overall and doesn't take any care. I have 2 large plants and have gifted it to family members it is so nice."

Fabulous and fluffy

"As you can see, this agastache really delivers for our hummingbirds which was the main reason I planted it. Also, we have clay soil, but I might have tossed a handful of soil conditioner into its planting hole, I can't remember. Anyway, just beautiful!"

I absolutely love this plant!

"I ordered two plants and decided to try to keep them in containers on my back deck where I keep my hummingbird feeders. Since these started to bloom, the hummingbirds have all but abandoned those feeders and have been spending all their time with these plants! So happy.
