Description

‘Rocket’ Calla Lily flowers in a saturated maroon hue. Callas are striking additions to perennial and container gardens and make exquisite floral arrangements. Calla Lily bulbs are easy-to-grow and will result in regal, elegant blooms in just over two months time. Callas are also favored for their foliage, which is lush with glossy, heart-shaped or pointed leaves, often flecked with white spots.

Native to South Africa, Callas prefer moist soil and sunny locations. Planting in containers where they can easily be watered is a great choice in dry climates. They benefit from shade or protection from intense afternoon sun, which can burn the foliage. In hot climates, the plant will die back and go dormant after flowering. Callas are perennial in zones 8-10; in cooler zones, you can dig and store the bulbs in a cool, dry location for the winter, then re-plant them in spring.

Planting & Care

Summer Blooming Bulbs, including popular varieties such as gladiolus and dahlias, are planted in the spring and bloom in the summer. Most of these bulbs are tropical and require warm weather to be planted. There must not be any danger of frost and your ground temperature must have reached 55 degrees Fahrenheit before planting. Many
of our summer blooming bulbs can be planted as perennials in zones 9-10 (zone 8 if mulched) but should be treated as annuals in cooler climates. You can lift them and store them in the fall, or bring patio pots inside before frost. See page 15 of our Planting Guide for a bulb depth planting illustration.

Growing Calla Lilies:

These tender bulbs can be planted in pots or in the ground. Calla Lily bulbs can be planted as perennials in zones 9-10 (zone 8 if mulched) but should be treated as annuals in cooler climates. You can lift them and store them in the fall, or bring patio pots inside before frost. Calla Lily bulbs quickly create a sizable plant, often growing to 36" high.
