Description

(12-24" tall) Elegant Lacy Phacelia is a no-fuss native wildflower that can really take the heat! This beauty thrives in full sun and tolerates dry soil, making it the perfect low-maintenance addition to your garden or meadow. Flowers are borne in intriguing curved clusters and open sequentially, gracing your planting with their delicate lavender-purple hue all summer long. Extra-long, whisker-like stamens and abundant nectar make the flowers beacons for butterflies and bees, keeping your garden buzzing with activity. They're a lovely and long-lasting cut flower, too! Lacy Phacelia can also be used as a summer cover crop, similar to buckwheat, to attract pollinators, add organic matter, and crowd out weeds. Or it can be planted in fall and allowed to winter-kill (if temperatures drop below 20 degrees F). The plants' deep roots "mine" minerals, making them available to subsequent crops. Plant this beauty among your vegetables — the flowers will entice beneficial hoverflies to lay eggs, and when they hatch the hungry larvae will happily consume any aphids pestering your plants.

Step-by-Step Wildflower Seed Planting Instructions

  1. Check for your last frost date and plant after this has passed. Choose a
    spot on your property that gets 6 or more hours of direct sun a day unless you are planting seeds for shade.
  2. Prepare your soil by clearing the area of all existing growth. Simply dig up everything that is growing, turn the soil and rake the area flat. If this is an area that has never before been gardened, you may need to till the area up to remove growth.
  3. Mix the seeds with sand* for better visibility and scatter the seeds directly on top of the soil. If you are sowing a larger area, we recommend using a seed spreader; if not, you can sow by hand.
  4. We recommend lightly compressing the seeds into the soil, making sure not to bury them. You can either walk on them, use a board or if you are sowing a larger area, rent a seed roller.
  5. Water so that the soil is moist, not soaking wet, until the seedlings are about 4-6" tall. After that, the seedlings will survive on natural rains. If you are experiencing very dry weather, we recommend watering occasionally.
