Columbine Meadow Rue (Thalictrum) is an ethereal perennial blooming with fluffy lilac-purple flowers in early summer. This low care Old World perennial is grown for both its flowers and attractive foliage. Grow Columbine Meadow Rue in sunny and partially shaded areas. In the western US where the sun is much stronger than in the hazy skies of the eastern US, plant it in partial shade so not to scorch the delicate foliage. It likes a compost-enriched garden loam with medium to moist growing conditions. It's a wonderful companion plant for Sedge (Carex) and Kashmir Sage (Phlomis cashmeriana).

Growing well
"I was worried I wouldn't be able to grow thalictrums, since I live in a dry part of Utah at 7,000 feet, but this plant settled in well last fall. It was one of the first things to come back this spring, and is at least four times as big as it was when I got it. I do have it in partial shade near a drainspout."
