Product Recommendations

Description

2" tall x 15-18" wide. A distinctive looking groundcover, Pterocephalus is a marvelous species closely related to Scabiosa (Pincushion Flower). It grows as a mat of attractive gray-green crinkled leaves and blooms from late spring through summer with large mauve-pink flowers followed by furry, silvery-pink seed heads. The dense, evergreen foliage tolerates light foot traffic and is a wonderful choice as crack filler in flagstone and pavers. Native to the mountains of Morocco. Introduced to the trade by Laporte Ave. Nursery. Low fertility, well-drained soil.

Planting & Care

Pterocephalus (Carpeting Pincushion Daisy) - a member of a widespread genus of wildflowers found in the Eastern Hemisphere.

Preferred growing conditions

  • Plant in most soil types, including dry clay planted in a full sun location.
  • Mulch with gravel.
  • Water regularly during the first growing season to establish the plant. Thereafter, weekly or bi-weekly deep watering is all this plant needs.
  • Deadheading is not needed. Mauve-pink daisies form fuzzy red seed heads after pollination. These can be lightly scratched off to clean up the plants if needed.
  • Fertilize lightly in the fall with a half-and-half blend of Yum Yum Mix and good-quality compost. Spread over the top of the foliage and water in to push the fertilizer mix through to the ground.

Special comments

  • This is an evergreen species that doesn't need to be trimmed unless stems are damaged.
  • Plants can be divided if more are needed elsewhere in the garden. Otherwise, leave it undisturbed.
