Penstemon rostriflorus ‘Standout Summer Fire’ (Beardtongue) is a native hybrid from the western U.S. selected by Richard Anderson for its increased bloom production, shrub-like growth habit, and early flowering season. P. rostriflorus is typically a late-summer to fall flowering species (September-October), while' Standout Summer Fire' flowers from July through October for months of striking color.
P. rostriflorus grows in shady canyons, dry mountain slopes, and open woodlands in elevations up to 8125 feet. Its dense growth provides cover for small wildlife and nesting habitat for native bees and its seeds serve as winter food for ants, chipmunks, and other seed eaters.
This Penstemon may reseed some; deadhead for the first two years to avoid seed set, and this will result in a stronger plant. After that, deadhead to encourage repeat blooming and if you want to avoid seedlings. It thrives in disturbed soils, so we recommend aerating the surrounding soil with push aerator or spading fork from time to time.

"Definitely will buy again. This one provides a nice pop of bright red mid summer when most of the flowers in my wildscape are blue, purple or pink. A good stand-in for paintbrush, which just doesn't grow in Tillamook. Made it through the winter in well drained loamy soil."
