Penstemon neomexicanus (New Mexico Beardtongue) is native to North America and is found in the Sacramento Mountains of southeastern New Mexico. Living on wooded slopes and open glades in coniferous forests, this is a rare and hardy garden-worthy perennial. It is also a host plant for the Checkerspot butterfly in the Sacramento Mountains. Plant them in well-drained average to lean soil in a sun-to-half-sun location. A gravel mulch will help them to re-seed ensuring future flowers. Drought tolerant once established, Penstemon are low-maintenance, essential additions to a waterwise garden.
