How do we use your location?
Knowing your location helps us recommend plants that will thrive in your climate, based on your Growing Zone.
6-10' x 6-8' wide. Mahonia fremontii is one of our very best native shrubs, growing naturally across much of the Southwestern US. This large-growing Desert Holly has year-round landscape interest with profuse, yellow, fragrant spring flowers, large bright red summer fruits and showy blue evergreen foliage. The shrub is rarely offered because it's slow to get to saleable size. But in the ground it gets big and lives for many years. The spiny leaves make it a great barrier plant for hedges and windbreaks.

"These are famous for not transplanting well. Because of this and their slow growth rate, many nurseries are reluctant to carry this incredible plant, due to it being underappreciated by customers. I have been looking for it for years after admiring it on the red cliffs around our area here in the southwest. I was so thrilled to discover that this company was brave enough to offer them for sale. Thank you for risking the lackluster reviews in order to bring us this truly special plant. I ordered five and managed to kill three of them by expecting them to be low water immediately. I will order more to replace. It's my fault. They are famous for being finicky upon transplant"
"I've had six, one foot plants in for nine years, and they are still under two feet! I wish they would hurry up and grow. At this rate I'll be dead before they reach five feet high. They are attractive; the leaves have an unusual shape and mine tend to turn reddish at the edges. Recommendation: buy much larger plants to start off or you will never see them mature."
