Leymus cinereus (Great Basin Wildrye) is a very tall growing, native, cool season grass. It blooms in late spring with long spikes of tan flowers held straight-up over stunning blue foliage. Late spring blooms are a valuable attribute, as most other large native grasses are warm season growers that flower much later in the summer and fall. The tan-and-blue grass is a perfect addition to sophisticated grass plantings, and an excellent companion for later blooming perennials.

Truely cold season grass

"When mature, will breakup line of boundary fence."

Xeric B. (3/5)

Tough as nails.

"I stuck this in a back corner of the yard where the sprinklers don't hit and not even the weeds grow. I remember to throw some water on it once a week if it's lucky, but thoroughly soak the ground when I do water. It's alive and reasonably happy. . . it's about tripled in size in 2 months. I'm in high desert with alkali clay, so if you're looking for a native, xeric, ornamental grass to pretty-up a difficult corner, it's a great pick. I'll be buying more."

Growing fast

"I planted this earlier this spring and am impressed with how much they have grown. They are already 8"" around and about 1' tall. Next year they will boom! I hope they don't get wider than 24"" wide like the description says."
