Description

This compact take on the Western US classic wildflower called blanket flower, SpinTop® Mariachi Copper Sun Gaillardia makes a cheery addition to dry flower gardens, rock gardens and perennial beds as well as hellstrips. This vigorous and free-flowering perennial blooms an astonishingly long time, starting in early summer and continuing through late fall with occasional watering and deadheading. Not only do bees and other pollinators revel in its pollen-rich flowers, but birds enjoy its seeds for months afterward. This little Gaillardia tolerates a wide range of soil moisture levels so long as soils are well-drained (avoid heavy clay and soils that sit wet) and handles periodic drought without missing a beat.

Tips For Growing Gaillardia (Blanket Flower)

Gaillardia (Blanket Flower) is a long-blooming native wildflower that is easy-to-grow and provides ample nectar for butterflies. It's resistant to browsing rabbits and deer.

Preferred growing conditions:

  • Needs sandy/gravely and sandy loam type soils. Avoid clay.
  • Does best with gravel mulches.
  • After their second growing season, only requires deep but infrequent watering. Too much water makes them floppy and shortens their lifespan.
  • Plant in full, hot sun.
  • Adding just a few handfuls of compost and Yum Yum Mix in the planting hole is enough. Don't plant into a rich, highly-amended soil.

Special comments:

  • Deadhead plants to prolong bloom. Leave a few seed heads on the plants to encourage re-seeding.
  • Blanket Flowers are generally grown from seed and are short lived perennials (3-4 years) and gardeners should replace them with new plants when the old plants lose vigor.

Endless blooms in year 1

"I planted these in early April in Denver. They survived several heavy snows soon after, then 90 degrees, then more snow, then a horrible hailstorm. And these just kept growing and blooming. I’ll deadhead and see 20 more blooms coming out in varying stages. They’ve done even better than some of the other blanket flowers I got at the same time. (No clue why. ) I find at least 5 bees on each plant at any time throughout the day. Seriously, this plant alone has helped me learn more about bees because I’ve spotted so many types of bees on them. And this is all in the first 3 months. I’m a big fan if I haven’t made that clear…"
