Description

18" tall x 18" wide (seed propagated). This prairie wildflower that endears itself to everyone who sees it in flower. Purple Prairie Clover is a heavy bloomer. The intensely red-violet flowers punctuate the stiff, upright stems, adding a nice structural element to the garden. Being a deep-rooted legume, Purple Prairie Clover adds valuable nitrogen to the soil and helps keep it fertile for neighboring plants. Well adapted to many different soil types, even tolerating clay.

Planting & Care

Planting And Growing Tips For Prairie Clover (Dalea) a genus of New World wildflowers that includes both woody and herbaceous species. These plants are legumes and fix nitrogen into the soil. Preferred growing conditions:

  • Plant in most any soil including clay with full sun conditions.
  • Mulching is not needed.
  • Water regularly the first growing season to establish the plants. Once established, infrequent, deep watering is fine.
  • Fertilizing is not needed, as they are legumes that fix nitrogen from the air and put it into the soil.
  • Allow the herbaceous types to re-seed. Seeds are also eaten by songbirds, so deadheading is not recommended.
