Description

Cercis canadensis var. texensis is a variety of eastern redbud native to southern Oklahoma, central Texas, and northeastern Mexico. This variety typically has a shrubbier, more compact form, and is more drought tolerant than the species. Striking wine-red buds bloom on bare stems in early spring, attracting pollinators, butterflies and hummingbirds. Its seed pods also serve as a food source for songbirds. This is an an excellent specimen for pollinator friendly low-water gardens.

Cercis canadensis var. texensis is adaptable to various soil types but thrives best in limestone or clay loam soils, typical of its native habitat. This tree requires 4-6 hours of direct sunlight daily, but benefits from protection against intense afternoon sun.
