Though prairie plants have enjoyed a surge of interest from gardeners across the country in recent years, development of improved garden forms of such plants has lagged behind. Blackhawks Big Bluestem Grass (Andropogon gerardii 'Blackhawks') represents a leap forward for this process. These grasses emerge in late-spring as understated, dark green tufts of foliage. By mid-summer, foliage on these grasses darkens quickly to a smoky purple and plants begin to grow taller to flower. By late summer, 'Blackhawks' becomes unmistakable, with deep, merlot leaves, stems, and seedheads; there's truly nothing like this grass. Despite their center-stage presence, 'Blackhawks' plants remain true to their durable prairie roots, thriving with little more than sun, and deep, occasional waterings in most kinds of soils. A tip for success: while Big Bluestem is exceptionally cold-hardy, it is most vigorous when summer temperatures regularly exceed the lower-80s in summer, F; may not thrive in mountain gardens that remain cool all summer.
