This Western US native columbine was selected for its extra-heavy bloom of large, soft-yellow flowers that begins in late-spring and continues on for months. The numerous, gently fragrant flowers on Yellow Queen Columbine (Aquilegia chrysantha 'Yellow Queen') are held facing forward or even up, making them extra visible in the bright shade, dappled light, and part-sun garden settings where this plant thrives. Yellow Queen makes an exceptionally versatile garden plant, growing well in a variety of garden settings and light regimes provided it is kept out of very hot and dry sites and very deep shades. This wildflower boasts superior heat- and drought-tolerance to the better-known Colorado Blue Columbine but still flowers longest and most heavily if provided with a bit of irrigation in areas that have hot, dry summers.
