Agastache neomexicana (New Mexico Hummingbird Mint) is a smaller growing species with narrow spikes of aromatic lavender-pink flowers. A very upright grower, Agastache neomexicana attracts butterflies and bees to its nectar rich flowers.

Description

24-30" tall x 18" wide. Agastache neomexicana (New Mexico Hummingbird Mint) is a delightfully different native Agastache, with its tight spikes of small, fragrant lavender-pink flowers and stiff upright stems, it is sure to please. Unlike other native Agastache that attract hummingbirds, NM Hummingbird Mint is excellent as a nectar source for bumblebees and butterflies.

The mid-summer flowers have a sweet scent with a hint of lavender and are excellent for dried arrangements. Cut back old stems to 2-3" above ground level in mid-spring. A sturdy, easily grown plant that grows wonderfully alongside Lavender and Ratibida. (Seed propagated.)

Tips for growing Agastache

Agastache are sun loving plants with aromatic foliage and flowers. They bloom from mid-summer into early fall and are resistant to rabbits and deer.

Agastache need lean, well-drained soils, prefer gravel mulches, and appreciate deep but infrequent watering after their second growing season

  1. Provide a fast draining soil that's naturally low in fertility, Don't plant into clay soils.
  2. Plant in full hot sun.
  3. Just a few handfuls of compost in the planting hole is enough. Don't plant into a rich, highly amended soil..
  4. Fertilize the Agastache just once in fall with Yum Yum Mix.
  5. New transplants need regular irrigation their first growing season to establish themselves. Watering can be reduced greatly during the second growing season when the plants have matured.

To improve winter-hardiness, and encourage re-seeding, leave the stems intact over the winter. In mid-spring, remove old stems just above the new foliage, about 4 or 5 inches above ground level.

If your conditions don't lend themselves to growing Agastache in your garden, they do well planted in containers.

Beautiful in Colorado

Winner in a hot, humid sunny climate!

"I bought this agastache for a full sun, Southern exposure area between a sidewalk and a brick facade. It is planted alongside Echinacea Pow Wow Wildberry I received the perfectly packaged plants in May and they have already more than quadrupled in size, are full, fragrant and with abundant bloom. Bees, butterflies and Hummingbirds seem quite pleased too. I was reluctant to try this in a hot and humid Kentucky climate, however, it has proven to thrive in its current location. Love it and High Country Gardens! Thank you."

Big and beautiful a month after planting

"I planted 4 of these a month ago and they have all taken off, I am actually shocked they are each almost two feet tall already (as the description said it was a smaller hyssop). Very upright and blooming nicely. I learned my lesson last year when every agastache I tried died. Don't even *think* about planting in clay, or watering more than once every few days (only if it's very hot and dry, but even then let them dry out first. . . when its mild I barel water them at all). Trouble is, when they die from too much water, it *looks* like they're parched and drying up. . . dont be fooled. I dump in a LOT of perlite when I plant these now unless I'm planting in sandy fast draining soil, and don't water them even when tempted more than 2-3 times a week (and that's only when it's in the 90s or 100s and I live in a desert!). They're all happy and healthy and blooming away. Would not recommend for rainy locations unless you plant in very sandy/rocky fast draining soil. Out west they are great so long as you mostly leave them alone! This particular species has grown faster and bloomed more than any others I've planted."

Reliable and attractive

"Planted three specimens four years ago and two are still alive and producing. Attractive, tidy flowers, makes excellent ""front row"" shorter specimen to enhance multi height viewing. Attracts butterflies and bees but hummingbirds taste quickly and move on. Has not spread or sent up volunteers."
