Description

Agastache 'Blue Boa' PP#24,050 (Hummingbird Mint). With deep purple-violet blooms, ‘Blue Boa’ is a sturdy upright grower that has large green leaves. It grows best in fast-draining soil and average moisture levels. Leave the stems in place over the winter months to improve cold hardiness. This perennial is a stunning hybrid variety of hummingbird mint that blooms from mid-to-late summer and has won the 2013 title of “Too Good to Wait Performer” at the Colorado State Perennial Trials. Seedlings will not be true-to-type and should be weeded out. 24" tall x 18-24" wide.

Tips for growing Agastache

Agastache are sun loving plants with aromatic foliage and flowers. They bloom from mid-summer into early fall and are resistant to rabbits and deer.

Agastache need lean, well-drained soils, prefer gravel mulches, and appreciate deep but infrequent watering after their second growing season

  1. Provide a fast draining soil that's naturally low in fertility, Don't plant into clay soils.
  2. Plant in full hot sun.
  3. Just a few handfuls of compost in the planting hole is enough. Don't plant into a rich, highly amended soil..
  4. Fertilize the Agastache just once in fall with Yum Yum Mix.
  5. New transplants need regular irrigation their first growing season to establish themselves. Watering can be reduced greatly during the second growing season when the plants have matured.

To improve winter-hardiness, and encourage re-seeding, leave the stems intact over the winter. In mid-spring, remove old stems just above the new foliage, about 4 or 5 inches above ground level.

If your conditions don't lend themselves to growing Agastache in your garden, they do well planted in containers.

Drought tolerant, deer resistant and beautiful color

"Looks fantastic right behind my ""Blue Hill"" salvia. Long bloomer. The hummingbirds really do visit it, as described. I think I only watered it once all spring and summer. Deer don't bother it. I like the mid sized height. When all the other perennials have stopped blooming, this just goes on and on. I love that about it. On my border, I have rose vervain in front , then blue hill salvia behind that, and then Blue Boa agastache right behind that. Great color combination! worth the money!"

Hmmm. . . Too Soon to Tell

"Planted this spring but plant is very slow to establish in spot where agastaches do well. Healthy but only about 8 inches tall with a single flower stalk. I am hoping it is just slowto get going. Very pretty flower, with more robust foliage and a fatter flower raceme than many agastaches. Time will tell."
