Portuguese Squill (Scilla peruviana) brings bold texture and rich blue color to the late spring garden. This striking bulb produces large, dome-shaped flower heads packed with dozens of starry violet-blue florets, forming a dense globe of color that stands out beautifully in borders and containers.
Blooming in late spring to early summer, Portuguese Squill grows about 12–18 inches tall and features a rosette of glossy, strap-like green leaves that create a lush base beneath the blooms. Each impressive flower head can hold 50 to 100 individual blossoms, creating a vibrant display that draws the eye and adds architectural interest to the garden.
Despite its name, Portuguese Squill is native to the western Mediterranean region and thrives in full sun and well-drained soil. It performs especially well in warm, sunny borders, rock gardens, and containers, where its bold blooms can shine. The flowers are also attractive to bees and pollinators, adding ecological value alongside their ornamental appeal.
