"Our sand cherry bush is thriving in alkaline sandy clay soil covered in basalt gravel in desert summer heat and cold wet winters. With an irrigation drip it is growing much larger around than advertised. It adds some beautiful greenery. #sweepstakes"
"I ordered 4 Pawnee Buttes Western Sandcherry shrubs, and they arrived happy and healthy. No wilting, and not a single tan or brown leaf on any of them. I put them in the ground the next day, and they are thriving. Three of the four are in full sun, and all four are healthy and are already getting visibly bigger after only a few weeks. They need a few seasons to get to full size, but that's OK. I can wait for these beauties."
"I garden in Albuquerque NM high desert. My house faces southwest. I have a berm in the front that I have zero success in getting anything to survive. I am thrilled with Pawnee Butte Sand Cherry. I went back for an addional 3. I stuck them in the ground (awful dirt, recently loosened with a 5 prong fork & added compost). They were pretty small. They never missed a beat & 1 even had a brief blooming. They seem to love the hot dry southwest full sun all day location. I can't wait to see the mature & am looking forward to the color in the fall. What a great find!"
"I love that this is a native plant and it looks fantastic mixed in with my herbs! #sweepstakes"
"This is the first time I have purchased plants from an online website, but I forged ahead and placed an order in January for several native and waterwise plants. I have planted all of them and have had only 1 casualty which was my fault for planting it in a location that was too shady. I am impressed with the great condition in which they arrived and have found all of them are thriving, in spite of my somewhat limited knowledge of gardening. I have used your website to find advice and recommendations to be invaluable. Thank you, High Country Gardens!!!!"
"Just planted it a few weeks ago and it looks happy. Hopefully will continue to grow & spread next spring-summer"
"The dark wine color is on the branches is striking. Mine is small but growing!"
"Atractive, low growing, bush. Blooms beautifully. Hardy. Low water. Attractive. and it has an edible fruit."
"Just blooming in Denver. Amazing what a little start can do. Rookie year at Lafayette Garden."
"A great choice for a low maintenance ground cover with spring and fall interest. I particularly like them planted with kinnikinnick. Plants that arrived were small but in good condition with well developed roots. When first planted, they were unfortunately a favorite of the local rabbits and needed to be protected. Now that they are larger and well established, browse isn't a issue. It took a few years to see the dramatic fall color - but totally worth the wait."
Jutting up from the plains of northeastern Colorado, the Pawnee Buttes are a majestic sight. This starkly beautiful land is also a place of extreme weather and growing conditions. Discovered growing there, Pawnee Buttes® Sand Cherry is the unique groundcover variety selection of Sand Cherry. Enjoy it for its tough-as-nails constitution, groundcover growth habit, a profusion of fragrant late spring flowers and fabulous glossy foliage. Fall turns the foliage a beautiful mahogany-red. Grows rapidly with modest supplemental irrigation and thrives in lean well-drained non-clay soils. A 2000 Plant Select® introduction. Cut back in spring after blooming is over, leaving 2-3 leaf buds on each branch. (cutting propagated)
