5-6' tall x 6' wide (seed propagated). Rhus trilobata is a hardy shrub native to North America from western Canada to California and Texas, and as far east as the Dakotas. Well adapted to a wide range of soil types, this cold hardy shrub can be grown across much of the US. Rhus is a good choice for screening and wind breaks and its strong root systems are useful for reducing erosion.
Rhus trilobata is a dioecious species whose female plants produce clusters of flowers that, when pollinated, develop into nutritious red berries that are an essential winter food source for birds and small mammals. Both male and female plants must be present for successful pollination and berry production. Male and female plants are indistinguishable as seedlings, so order three or more to ensure berry set.
Plant Rhus trilobata in a sunny to partly shaded spot with well-draining soil. Once established, this drought-tolerant plant requires minimal watering and is generally pest and disease-free. Prune in early spring to remove dead or damaged branches and consider cutting it to the ground every 3-5 years in the fall to rejuvenate growth. This plant and 'Gro-low' Sumac are unrelated to poison sumac; the ornamental leaves do not cause skin irritation.
