Liatris aspera (Rough Blazing Star, Button Blazing Star, Gayfeather) is a large growing, showy drought tolerant species from the Mid-West. The large pink flowers are highly attractive to bees and butterflies. Drought resistant/drought tolerant perennial plant (xeric).
36" tall x 12-15" wide. Liatris aspera is native to a wide area in the mid-section of the US, Rough Blazing Star (or Button Blazing Star) is well adapted to drier conditions than many other Liatris species. Blooming from mid-summer into early fall, the flowers are highly attractive to numerous butterflies and native bee species; a great plant for the habitat garden! Low fertility, well drained soil.
Planting & Care
Growing Liatris (Gayfeather or Blazing Star)
This is a group of summer blooming native wildflowers that are easy-to-grow and provide an ample late season nectar supply for butterflies. Liatris are resistant to browsing rabbits. These perennials stay dormant later in the spring than many plants, so be patient. Because they naturally stay asleep longer into the spring, we will ship dormant plants early in the planting season. It’s ideal to plant dormant plants; don’t up-pot them for planting later in the growing season. Water in dormant plants thoroughly at planting time and water very sparingly, or not at all, until they begin to push new growth as the weather warms. Preferred growing conditions:Needs sandy/ gravelly and sandy loam type soils. Liatris unctate and L. mucronata will do fine in dry clay (I,e, clay soil in high spots, hillsides, raised beds).Does best with a course textured mulch (pine needles, crushed pecan shells, small bark chips), as well as gravel when planted in a xeriscape.Only requires deep but infrequent watering after the second growing season. Plant in full, hot sunJust a few handfuls of compost and Yum Yum Mix in the planting hole is enough. Don’t plant into a rich, highly amended soil.

Adds height to flower beds.
"I planted these in a flower bed that receives the harsh Texas afternoon sun. They took 2 summers to establish their roots but they really put on a show during the 3rd summer. They grew almost 5-feet tall; I cut them back after their blooms faded and they bloomed again in the fall. I recently purchased more to add more height to the flower garden."

Better than I thought
"Growing these way further west than they occur naturally. They arrived looking poor and thought they wouldn't make it, but 3/4 survived. I figured these would be thirsty even though I always see guides for this species say, ""Dry"" soil, but dry conditions in Wyoming is way different than dry conditions in Missouri. I definitely gave them some supplemental water in their first full year after planting the previous fall, but not frequently. Never seemed to look drought stressed, but all three plants are less than 20"" tall(which is fine be me), where I've seen these get massive in more mesic situations."

Get ready for the blazing fireworks !
"A few years bac we purchased some Liatris from HCG as an experiment in a section of a garden. The old adage of Sleep / Creep / Leap has held us captive to watch how beautiful the Rough Blazing Star blooms are as they announce the end of summer. Since the blooms start at the top and last bud to grow we're never quite sure when the ""kaboom' will happen but when it does the color explosion of the blazing star is delights us, our neighbors and every butterfly on its trek south. While the stems with blooms are 3'-4' long, the blooming stems are on top of the plant stalks so the final height of our beauty is between 6'-7'. This makes this a perfect plant for the background or inside corner of a garden."

Slow, but steady grower
"The first plant I received was small and died within several days. HC replaced it and the new plant is doing very well. It has many potential flowers, but hasn't shown its colors yet (mid summer)."
— RRZ (4/5)
Slow, but continuous.
"The first plant I received was nearly destroyed during shipping and died within several days after planting. HC sent a replacement and it is growing slowly, but strong and continuous. Every week it looks better. It has several blooms now and I am eager t o see it in bloom."
— RRZ (4/5)
They are tough
"They are planted in an area where deer walk through, one got stepped on and I thought it was history, but I put a stake by it and it came back up, yay! They aren't very big yet so don't know much about them yet."
— Diane (4/5)
Still young
"It has been a challenging year to plant with temperatures 10 to 20 degrees higher than normal, low humidity and wind, and a drought. I hope the plants can establish themselves and grow bigger next year."
— Vickie (4/5)
Waiting for first bloom. . . . it is Nebraska
