How do we use your location?
Knowing your location helps us recommend plants that will thrive in your climate, based on your Growing Zone.
Hesperaloe parviflora (Texas Red Yucca), a very showy native succulent from southern TX and northeastern Mexico, is not a new plant to cultivation. What is new about this beautiful plant has been the realization of its tolerance to sub-zero winter temperatures! Chief horticulturist, David Salman has had this plant in his display gardens at Santa Fe Greenhouses for many years, where it has flourished through numerous bone-chilling winters. So here it is; a xeric, long blooming, good-looking, very low maintenance plant that attracts hummingbirds. Hesperaloe will often take 2 to 3 years to reach blooming size. So be patient and protect it from deer who love to eat the succulent leaves. (seed propagated)

"we already had two of these in out backyard and after taking two years to get established decided on two more. While one only survived it is thriving. The other that died was our fault. we should have encased it from the dogs so they could not dig it up. By the time I discovered it, it was to late. Considering a bunch of other flowers. Would love a pre-planned garden but have not found one that contains 'all full sun' plants. Half of the plants says full sun and 'afternoon shade'. we are west facing in TX so no afternoon shade."
"I planted this plant out by the road among some rocky soil on a hill. I'm hoping it will make it. We'll see."
"Planted these Yucca plants in my Rock garden. Can't wait to see them in bloom."
"The star rating on this plant is hard for me, so I just gave it a 5. I don't know what it looks like because every time it gets more than 3"" tall, the rotten rabbits nub it off again. However, it is still trying grow, despite being constantly attacked. Hopefully it makes it through the winter, and maybe next spring it will get some size on it before the rabbits find it again. I wouldn't recommend this plant if you have lots of rabbits in your area, unless you plan to put a fence up around it. Otherwise, I think it would probably be great."
"Again,I bought this as an experiment, just to see if it would make it through our humid summers and increasingly wierd winters, here in New England. It basically just sat in the garden and didn't do anything this summer, but it didn't die either. I'm hoping it makes it through the winter and really struts its stuff next spring, because its a beautiful plant and I'd love to have it thrive in my garden."
"This is a great item that seems to handle any conditions thrown at it. A great addition to the eastern garden."
"I was apprehensive when I purchased it but am very glad I did. I didn't have to store it in the garage for the winter and during our spring clean up we noticed it was already blooming. It now has 6 shoots about 4 ft each and the seeds we planted from it last fall are sprouting. I plan to add some to the front of my house to see how it does with a northern exposure."
"I planted this in a xeriscape garden last spring. Knowing that Yucca take off slow, I wasn't surprised that it didn't do much last year, but at least it survived the winter! So I'm hoping that it will take off and possibly bloom this year."
