Description
2005 Perennial Plant of the Year 8" tall x 18" wide. Dianthus 'Firewitch' is superb for both its gray-blue foliage and its bouquet of single hot-pink flowers. Blooming in late spring, we use 'Firewitch' Garden Pinks to mix with plants that have "gray" or "silver" foliage. Marrubium rotundifolia, Achillea (Yarrow) and various Lavenders are good companion plants. The non-green leaves of these companions help to cool down the intense flower color of Dianthus 'Firewitch' and provide beautiful contrasting foliage when the flowers are gone. More xeric than many Dianthus, 'Firewitch' likes a lean, well drained soil with plenty of sunshine. Deadhead after flowering in early to mid summer. Good for Firescaping (Cutting propagated)

Stunning pink flowers
"Such pretty, dainty little flowers on blue-green foliage. The foliage color goes great with lavender plants. We had to install a dry well by our parking area because it was flooding constantly and we have a high water table where we live. Flooding problem solved, but nothing would grow because it is in full sun and so dry now. I decided to go with waterwise plants that would do fine with dry feet and watering from a few sprinklers and mother nature. I planted everything in October 2024 and already the plants are growing like crazy and filling the area! Next year promises to be even more spectacular! I highly recommend getting the Firewitch Dianthus if you want a bright and dainty flower with pretty foliage in your garden."

Bright Spring Color
"This is a welcome splash of color in the late spring - early summer! It's well worth forgiving it it's few flaws (short bloom time, necessary deadheading) for the early season splash of brilliant color it brings and its evergreen folliage the rest of the season. The clump size slowly expands over several seasons but is not at all invasive. Its bright pink color will brighten your spirits after a long cold winter, and that alone makes it a keeper!"

"The hard Northeast winter doesn't seem to have phased it! We didn't lose a single Dianthus. And now, despite having had no rain all spring, it's all blooming great. So healthy, hardy and drought resistant!"

"I put it along my driveway. We have terrible soil and little rain. With a bit of irrigation, the plants have all taken off this year with a brilliant showy display. It's fantastic contrast next to the native purples (Blue Chelan Penstamen, Lupine)."
