How do we use your location?
Knowing your location helps us recommend plants that will thrive in your climate, based on your Growing Zone.
Cotyledon orbiculata (Pig's Ear) has large disk-like silver leaves, edged in red, grow on short stubby stems. Mature plants bloom in summer with candelabras of dusky pink flowers that sit high above the foliage. Excellent as a long-lived container plant for outdoor patios and other garden spaces, it can be brought indoors for winter. Or grow it in a rock garden with excellent drainage and protection from extreme cold. A widespread species native throughout much of South Africa, our collection originates from the highest mountains in the country, the Drakensbergs.
As soon as your order is placed you will receive a confirmation email. You will receive a second email the day your order ships telling you how it has been sent. "they look a bit sick"
"This is a great plant for a sunny site, particularly the south-facing side of the house, right next to the foundation. I'm sold zone 5b at 6,500 feet in SW Colorado. I planted two in the rain shadow of the south side of the house, under the eaves. Thing is, when it snows, the south side roof melts the next day, dripping on the edge of the site. I hadn't thought about that. So I set an old window to protect the plants from drip. That worked great. However, when it was really cold (zero to single digits), I covered the plants with an old sheet. Another mistake. One side gets more dripping, and water splashed on the covering sheet. The sheet then froze solid. That killed one plant. The other one, which remained dry and protected, came out of winter like a champ. I'm going to move it to a more protected site, one deeper into the rain shadow and less roof dripping. this plant is worth the extra effort needed for colder climates."
"Nice succulent, but very unlikely to be hardy to zone 6. Every other source I can find lists it as only hardy to zone 9."
"Thought with pot size 2. 5"" plant would be small. Was I surprised at the size of plant. They were in good shape and well packed. May get more in spring."
"I ordered 4 of these and all are doing well. They are all in pots. The red edge is subtle, but adds a nice touch. When a planned cactus garden is finally established, these will be along the edge, they look so much like a cactus and do not have spines. Even though this plant is marked rabbit resistant, they will always be protected from rabbits and gophers."
