Blue Grama Grass Hachita (Bouteloua gracilis) is an excellent native turf grass that has good drought tolerance and low maintenance requirements. It grows to a height of 4-12", including its "eyelash-like" seed heads. Mowing is optional, depending on whether an informal meadow look is desired. Hachita is quick to germinate, is excellent for erosion control and drought resistant. Hachita requires full sun, well-drained conditions and thrives in sandy or clay soils.

Beautiful!

"I moved into a house with a backyard that had gravel and artificial turf, period. Full sun most of the day. Last summer I used some of the gravel to create a bed and planted a lot of pollinator-friendly perennials in large pots. This summer I hired a landscaper to transform the rest into a grassy area and flagstone-and-brick walkway. The seed began germinating in about a week and now is about 6-8"" high. I overseeded the bare spots at the beginning of July and those are already filling in. The grass has a silky texture and moves when a breeze comes up. It's a bit wild, but I love that! I'm so glad I discovered the seed on this website. I don't think it's available anywhere else. Even my very experienced landscaper wasn't aware of this variety."

Plan on buying more in the spring

"I put down 5 lbs of Hachita Blue Gramma seed in my backyard this spring. I followed the watering instructions and it germinated well within 10 days. It since has gone absolutely crazy. Growing hardy and thick even in the heat of the summer. As time goes on more and more keeps coming up. It has received heavy traffic and bounced right back. I plan on ordering more in the spring to over seed and start my front yard area. Had I know if was going to be this successful I would have doubled my order this year and done more of my yard at once."

This is soft prairie grass.

"Loved my blue gramma back yard with its soft texture and drought tolerance. The biggest surprise was not having bright spring green grass. It took longer to wake up in the spring and the color is grey green/brown, not dark green lawn grass. The height was taller than 12 inches too. Left uncut the seed heads are pretty but the wind blows the tall grass over. Extremely water thrifty the 3rd season. Loved how a couple days of light watering perked up the lawn before a weekend BBQ party. My city ordinance required lawns to be mowed so I had to find little nooks to let it go to seed. Overall it was low maintenance."

I will order more!

"I have been gradually transforming my entire large yard, front and back to native, low water use, pollinator and hummingbird friendly landscape. I have done this primarily with seed, then using specific plants for accent and feature areas. Blue Grama grass was my choice for areas near my patios and decks. Following the directions to the letter my seed (ordered 2 years ago) sprouted in about 4 days. My daughter from San Diego just visited here in Salt Lake City and she and her two dachshunds loved the soft wispy nature of the grass. It is inviting to sit and roll in for both the pups and us humans, so much so that she is going to re-landscape their yard with Blue Grama grass when they get home. I've noticed that the quail seem to be scouting out nesting opportunities as well in the low cover the new grass provides."

Looks like a winner

"I bought the seeds last year, and had to delay planting longer than I wanted while some concrete borders were completed. Prepped the ground according to the instructions, planted -- then held my breath. Within 3-4 days we were seeing the green fuzz of germination and in spite of the late start the area was well-established ahead of our first freeze. The two areas are looking great and I'm really excited to see them green up this spring. We have had almost zero snow this winter and the water rates have increased so it was a great time to install a less-thirsty lawn."

Doing well in first season -- I'm a Grama fan

"Grama seemed like an interesting low-water alternative to Kentucky Blue, so I planted it on my side and back yards. So far it's looking all right. I bought 12lbs of seed to sow on about 4,000' square feet. I have about 2 lbs left for next year, to fill in empty spots. There wasn't a good mechanical way to spread the seed. Because it's expensive, I wanted to lay the seed down in a precise way. I tried a drop spreader, but the seeds wouldn't fall through the slots -- they're long with a light body and wings. I ended up spreading the seeds by hand. In some areas I covered the seeds with about 1/4 inch of spagnum moss. These areas sprouted the best, and grew the best as well. We had a long, dry summer. I ran each irrigation line for about 5 minutes, three times a day to get the grass going. I started seeing growth after about a week. After about 6 weeks I was mowing at a high setting at least once a week. Mowing helped it grow faster and thicker. If you don't mow this grass, it grows to a little over a foot tall, with eyelash seed heads -- decorative grass! I haven't figured out where I'll take advantage of this yet, but I plan to have parts of my lawn un-mowed to enjoy these decorative seed heads. I spread Scotts Turf Builder on the lawn 2 times, and have also sprayed with Sprectracide 2 times as well. The more weed-free your planting area is, the better. If you have the time, I think it's best to water the area for 2 weeks, then re-till it all before planting. The grass is a lighter green, not the the dark bluish green we're used to. It is a clump grass, so after being mowed it looks a bit rough, instead of a smooth carpet. The grass went dormant mid-October as soon as the weather cooled off. The Grama lawn is off to a good start. I'm looking forward to getting it in great shape next summer. It's not a standard dark green-blue, carpet-like lawn (and not nearly as thirsty, either), but it is an interesting lawn."

Germinated in 3 days

"I've struggled to find a decent lawn alternative here in Washington, DC. We get a lot of humidity, but my yard gets full zone and in summer it's an absolute kill zone - not even clover will survive the dryness. So I'm taking a chance on this Hachita blue grama grass, even though it doesn't normally do well in DC. (The folks at High Country Gardens were very helpful in talking over what was necessary to grow the grass - good drainage - and I know pretty well that I'm taking a flyer trying to grow it in DC humidity. ) I'm writing the review now because I'm not holding High Country Gardens responsible for any disaster that follows. :-) I tilled about 1000 sq feet of yard and sowed the seeds on Saturday morning. Was careful to keep the soil wet by watering AM and afternoon as instructed. (I also covered it with a little bit a leaf mulch - about a 1/4 inch - to help keep the soil damp and discourage the birds. ) I woke up this morning, Tuesday, to find a whole yardful of tender green shoots. Amazing that the seeds germinated in only 3 days. I'm far from expert at spreading seeds, but the germination rate/coverage seems good and I'm very happy. (I have to say, also, that the experience of digging my fingers into the big bag of seeds - which are pillowy feathery things - was one of my coolest experiences as a gardener so far. ) I really hope that the grass will be happy because I think it's just beautiful and I love that you can either mow or ignore it, and it looks great both ways. I'll report back in a year on whether I managed to keep the lawn alive!"

I would definitely purchase this product again!

"Great low water-use no mow lawn alternative."

Fool Proof!

"Planted seeds 3 days ago and have achieved green ""fuzz"". Watered twice a day in 95 degree heat with 35 mph winds. Excellent quality seed, seems like 100% germination rate."
