How do we use your location?
Knowing your location helps us recommend plants that will thrive in your climate, based on your Growing Zone.
Buchloe dactyloides 'Prestigeā¢' (Buffalo Grass) has fine soft blades with a stunning green color. It is moisture and humidity tolerant and outperforms all other varieties of buffalo grass in the southern and southeastern United States. 'Prestigeā¢' Buffalo Grass has exceptional disease and insect resistance and a very low pollen rating.
'Prestigeā¢' Buffalo Grass has a deep root system that extends 6 to 8 feet. It is an excellent choice for residential or commercial lawns and qualifies for LEED points for water efficient landscaping, as it uses only ¼ā of water per week. Plugs will need regular watering to get established, particularly the first four weeks. Make sure to soak deeply during irrigation so the roots will grow deeply. More frequent irrigation will be required if establishing the grass in hot weather or sandy soils. In most areas, once established, the grass will not need supplemental watering.
'Prestigeā¢' Buffalo Grass grows to a height of 4-6". While establishing the grass plugs, it is important to mow the area between 1 ½ to 3 inches to control weed growth. Once established, 'Prestigeā¢' can be left un-mown during the summer season, if a natural look is desired. For a more manicured look, mow as frequently as desired. In early spring, mow to a height of 1ā, which will allow the buffalo grass to green up earlier. In zones 6 or below, mow to a height of 2 to 2 ½ inches in late summer or early fall, in preparation for winter.
'Prestigeā¢' Buffalo Grass was developed by University of Nebraska agronomists and released in 2003. One flat of 70 plugs spaced 12" x 12" apart covers 70 sq. ft. See Lawn Replacement Instructions for more information. A detailed planting and maintenance instruction sheet is provided with each order.

"The grass came back a little in 2024, but none grew this year."
"I have been purchasing these plugs since 2020. Each section takes about 2 years to fully fill into a lawn with about a 10 inch space between the plugs. It is important to plant the plugs early as it gets very frustrating trying to separate them in the flat once they start sending out their little ""feelers. "" I use scissors to cut them apart and it does take a lot of time. I generally plant in May or June and water every day for the first three weeks, then at least 2-3 times a week for the next month or so. They are tough little guys but I do lose about 4-5 plugs for various reasons, usually by not securing them well enough in my mostly clay soil. In my North Denver climate, they go dormant as soon as it stops raining (I don't water or mow the grass) but green up again as soon as they get enough moisture. In spring, you need to be patient as they do take longer than other grasses to wake up. Those ""feelers"" I talked about are a blessing and a curse as they grow uncontrollably and the grass will spread everywhere."
"I've planted california (UC Verde) buffalo grass before in souther california and really enjoy it as a lawn. It was soft, low water use, attractive, and our dogs loved it. I decided to give the prestige buffalo grass a try here in Jacksonville, FL. Most of our lawn is the typical florida St Augustine grass. St Augustine is an overall terrible grass as its susceptible to lawn diseases, bug damage, and isnt really drought tolerant. The plugs showed up in overall good shape. Some plugs had grown into others and separating was a bit challenging. We have a very sandy soil here, so it took longer for them to root in and become established, also requiring a lot more water. The sandy soil also lacks alot of nutrients compared to the clay soil of other parts of the country, so I've been spreading a healthy amount of milorganite to encourage Stolons and lateral spread. I planted these in May 24 and now that it's Aug, the plugs are just now throwing out runners like crazy. I'm hoping they'll continue to spread and fill in bare spots before temps drop in Nov. Overall I'm happy with the product, so far looks great and hope it will overtake the St Augustine lawn once I can cut back on water."
"We planted our initial buffalo grass from seed. The plugs we purchased from HCG were used to fill in areas where the seed struggled. The plants arrived earlier than we were prepared for (that was on us) so we kept them watered in the containers. The roots were a bit overgrown by the time we planted them but the did very well. We will get some more next spring."
"Planted on a slope where I don't want to mow. Has done very well. Spreading nicely & not growing tall. Will likely buy more next spring."
"This may sound like a commercial for High Country Gardens but I am so impressed with them and the product that I can't say enough positive things about them. Here's my story. On May 24, 2017 I ordered two trays of Prestige Buffalo Grass from High Country Gardens. I live in Las Vegas, Nevada and I was told by them that this is the right grass for my area. I chose Buffalo grass because of it's drought hardiness. Unless given copious amounts of water, EVERYTHING dies here, except succulents and even they struggle in July. My order shipped on May 30 and it was delivered on June 2. On that date, the temperature was 97 degrees. The plugs were in amazing condition upon receipt. Even the Fed Ex guy was doubtful they'd be ok. . . they sat in his hot truck (imagine how hot it was in that steel box!) all day until 2 p. m. Yet, they were perfect and, believe it or not, still moist. The next day we hit over the century mark in temperatures and haven't been lower than 105 since then. . . we've had several days in excess of 110 and even several at 116 degrees. I planted the plugs very early in the morning (about 5:30 a. m. ), while the temperature was still in the high 80s, in an area that receives full sun. Yes, I was concerned. No, I honestly didn't think they'd make it. To date, out of two trays, I've lost only four plugs. Not only are the rest surviving the intense heat and direct sun, they are THRIVING - sending their little runners all over the place. I do water them several times a day. One month after planting, however, I couldn't be more pleased with their progress. I will not hesitate to order from High Country in the future and, if you want a lawn and live in the desert, you will LOVE this grass. It's amazing."
"I was leary with deep South conditions, but it looks like a winner."
"Wish we had not been going thru a drought in our area when I planted it. Will plant more this coming Spring. The ones that got the correct amount of moisture did great."
"If you don't live in the West, the subject line of this review might not make sense. For Westerns, though, it is a big deal. I had an area of Buffalo grass that was doing well in a very difficult soil location. Sadly, it was part of an area burned by a very hot wildfire. Amazingly, the grass returned when nothing else in the area even tried to grow. Yea for Heritage plants!"
"I bought plugs as sod was so expensive. I really like the buffalo grass as it doesn't require alot of water. Drought tolerant was a big draw in purchasing. I can go 3 or weeks or more without mowing in the summmer while I watch my other neighbors mowing their yards weekly. When plannting the plugs, I got the plug enhancer power pack to get it starting well. It does make a difference, you can also use root stimilator. This is a warm grass so it does go brown starting late September. In April is starts to have that nice spring green color to let you know it's ready come back."
