Zauschneria canum ‘Northfork Coral’ is a uniquely colored selection of hummingbird trumpet that blooms in late summer with showy coral-orange flowers. The foliage makes a nice six-inch tall bright green mat, spreading slowly via underground roots. A little extra water when blooming increases the flowers. Discovered by plant explorer/nurseryman Sean Hogan in the mountains of northern CA. Drought resistant/drought tolerant plant (xeric).

Planting & Care
Zauschneria (Hummingbird Trumpet, California Fuchsia, Fire Chalice) a genus of western US native wildflowers known for their fiery orange/scarlet flowers that bloom in late summer and fall. Pink or coral-colored flowers are very rare. All colored flowers are highly attractive to hummingbirds.
Preferred growing conditions:
Plant in well-drained soil type but avoid clay. Position in a full sun location. Groundcover-type, Orange Carpet, enjoys some afternoon shade in hot summer climates. Zauschneria seems to particularly like growing on hillsides or sloping beds to enhance winter drainage. Avoid planting in depressions that collect water.
Mulch with gravel or pine needles. Zauschneria enjoy cool roots and sunny tops so mulching is very beneficial.
Water regularly during the first growing season to establish the plant. These are xeric plants but don't like to be grown too dry. Weekly or bi-weekly deep watering is needed when conditions are dry in the heat of summer.
Deadheading is not needed.
Fertilize lightly in the fall with Yum Yum
Special comments:
Leave standing over the winter. Cut back to just above ground level in mid-spring.
Zauschneria spread by underground roots and should be given room to spread. If they grow too wide for their space, dig suckers in early to mid-spring and replant.
Watch for fleabeetles which can defoliate the plants in late spring/early summer.

Beautiful coral pink blooms and wide leaves
"Lovely and unusual variety with eye catching coral pink blooms and wide leaves. Seems to need more water than other varieties I have, but mine had lots of flowers and bloomed for many months. Didn't have many problems with pests, and it attracts hummingbirds. Highly recommended!"
— Debra (5/5)
High Country Took Care of me!
"High Country Gardens replaced my dead plants within days of my previous comment. I should have just called them first with my problem. The new plants arrived in great shape, obviously well rooted into their pots. Thank you!!!"
