Description

2003 Plant Select Winner 6" tall x 12" wide (cutting/seed propagated). A perennial pansy? Say it's true! Viola corsica is a much sought after, but difficult to find, perennial that will not only live year to year in your garden but will bloom most of the time too. The blue-purple flowers are whiskered with white and held well above the foliage on sturdy stems. Corsican Pansy appreciates compost enriched garden soils and regular watering.

Planting & Care

Viola (Violet) are a group of annual and perennial flowers native primarily to the Northern Hemisphere, but does not include African violets which are members of another genus.

Preferred growing conditions:

  • Plant Viola in compost-enriched, acidic loam. Perennial Sweet Violet is best positioned in full to partial-shade locations. Bedding Violas like full sun to partial shade.
  • Mulch with common mulch materials in dry Western climates. Leave un-mulched in moister Eastern climates.
  • Water regularly during the first growing season to establish the plant. Sweet Violet likes regular irrigation to keep the soil moderately moist. Bedding Viola needs regular summer irrigation, too.
  • Deadheading the plants will prolong blooming and prevent unwanted seedlings.
  • Fertilize lightly in the fall with a half-and-half mix of Yum Yum Mix and good-quality compost. Supplement that with the addition of soil sulfur if the foliage is looking chlorotic (yellow).

Special comments:

  • Sweet violets are semi-evergreen and should not be cut back too hard in spring. A light trimming to remove winter-damaged foliage is sufficient.
