"These arrived significantly larger than I anticipated, which was great. I ordered an 18 plug tray, but received 18 individual pots. However, the packaging was awful, and they also arrived out of their pots and covered in soil. So far, all 18 are alive. They definitely like more water than I had hoped. They do not seem to be getting any larger, but they also do not appear unhappy. The idea that they would make a quick windbreak seems optimistic. I have had two of the unselected species version for four years, and they have yet to exceed four feet. I am hoping for a bit more from these, but it is just too soon to tell."
"Purchased 9 and planted June first. All are doing well and are approximately 2 feet tall with seed shoots over 3 ft. in just over 3 months. Looking forward two how tall they will get next year. Planted along the back fence as a border. We live in zone 6b, south central Kansas."
"I purchased 2 giant Sacaton grass for my Oklahoma City house for a new dry garden. It took right off as soon as warm weather arrived. We had our usual 30 inches of rain this year and I watered them only about 4 times in the summer - adding a little water right at the roots during drier weeks. Fast growth to about 3 feet wide with seed heads at 5 feet and this is only the first year. I am buying more."
"I bought 6 and planted in late spring. Primary uses are as a screen so that I don't have to look at obnoxious neighbors, and wind/snow break. We had very late spring snow and a couple of hail storms - I kept watered/sheltered in the garage until it was relatively safe. The late spring planted grass did very well. It is almost October and some of the grass is 2 1/2 feet tall. Initially, I thought that the grass was way too small and that it would take years to get any height. My observation is that the grass planted in a dry, sandy part of the yard is thriving. The grass planted in another area of the yard that has heavier soil (higher clay content) is doing very well, but not as great as those planted in sandy area. Makes sense since this grass is a native of Arizona. I ordered another 4 and planted the 2nd week of September. The newly planted grass is doing well with supplemental watering. We've had . 01"" of rain in the last month."
"Ordered a flat of nine and planted after last frost at elevation of 5,500 ft. All grew vigorously under drip irrigation (see attached photo showing plant in Fall of same year). So pleased I ordered more for Fall planting."
"This grass is a huge hit in our yard! We have about 50 of them placed throughout our property. They are nice and stately and provide structure and boundaries, without the high expense of hardscaping. Those that have been neglected and abused, look shriveled and brownish and don't grow much. . . but they still survive! :) We have not lost EVEN ONE, which is in sharp contrast to just about every other plant species out there. Due to our harsh climate, ravenous pests and wildly divergent conditions, plus challenging soil, normally even the hardiest of perennials typically have only about a 66% survival rate after one year. Windbreaker also responds very quickly to favorable conditions. It bounces back from trauma (drought, wildlife foraging, competition, etc) almost immediately. After about a week of proper care, new growth is very noticeable and substantial. Seems to very much appreciate being planted in a well or having a moat around it to hold water for a bit and allow it to soak it up. Also enjoys being mulched around the roots with plant material such as grass clippings, tree leaves, etc. Ours were planted in fall and we went with the 5 inch premium size pots. During the cold season we watered 2-4 times a month depending on weather. Once it warmed up, we moved to watering 2-3 times a week. Now that they are more established and the weather has softened a bit, we have moved to watering 1-2 times a week. Now almost a year after planting, those that have a well around them, etc are the same size or larger than pampas grass which was planted at the same time. . . but from 2-3 gallon pots! Those that have had severe challenges (in a spot where a well wasn't practical, for example, or strangled by weeds) are about the size of a plant which would be found growing in a 1 gallon pot. The leaves are very soft and not serrated or sharp. Almost all have flowered, some are still getting ready to flower."
