Deam’s Black Eyed Susan (Rudbeckia fulgida v. deamii) is an outstanding wildflower that blooms in mid-summer with a profusion of large, golden flower petals surrounding a black center cone. Easy to grow and vigorous, it is considered the best of the seed-grown coneflowers because of its toughness, huge quantities of flowers, and sturdy, upright habit. A wonderful plant for prairie gardens that offers food and habitat for pollinators and birds.

Description

Deam’s Black Eyed Susan (Rudbeckia fulgida v. deamii), also known as Deam’s Coneflower, is an outstanding wildflower that blooms in mid-summer with a profusion of large, golden-orange flower petals surrounding a black center cone. Native to a few states in the Midwest (Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio), this perennial thrives in all soil types, including clay, and loves lots of sun. Deam’s Black Eyed Susan is vigorous and pest resistant. In the hot humid south, however, plants need good air circulation and occasional division to discourage foliar diseases. It has even been recognized by European gardeners, and received the Royal Horticultural Society’s prestigious Award of Garden Merit in 1993. Deadheading can extend the bloom time, but leave flowers standing to provide seed heads for songbirds. Native bees, butterflies, and other pollinators are attracted to the flowers. Other perennials that make good companions for Deam’s Coneflower include native ornamental grasses like Prairie Switchgrass (Panicum) and ‘Blonde Ambition’ Grama Grass, as well as Prairie Sage (Salvia azurea), and Poppy Mallow (Callirhoe).

Planting & Care

Rudbeckia (Black-Eyed Susan) - a genus of North American wildflowers known for their showy yellow coneflowers. Most species are perennial, but Rudbeckia hirta and all the showy cultivars are biennial, growing only leaves and stem the first season and blooming the following year.

Preferred growing conditions

  • Plant in most soil types including clay. Rudbeckia prefers to be planted in full to partial-sun locations.
  • Mulch with common mulching materials except for moist climates where plants should remain un-mulched.
  • Irrigate regularly during the first growing season to establish the plants. Black Eyed Susan likes dry to moderately moist soil conditions and should be given weekly supplemental irrigation in arid Western climates. Rainfall is generally sufficient in moister eastern climates.
  • Deadheading will help to keep the plants blooming longer into the late summer. But leave the last flush of flowers on the plants to set seeds
  • Fertilize lightly in the fall with a half-and-half blend of Yum Yum Mix and good-quality compost.

Special comments

  • Seeds are enjoyed by seed-eating songbirds. Plants with seed heads should be left standing over the winter months. Cut back hard in early to mid-spring. Biennial Rudbeckia hirta should be selectively cut back to remove dead foliage in mid-spring to prepare the plants for flowering later in summer.
  • Rudbeckia generally doesn't need to be divided.
