Description

Bergeranthus vespertinus (Ice Plant) (sometimes called Bergeranthus jamesii) is native to South Africa and was introduced by plant explorer Kelly Grummons of Prairie Storm Nursery in Denver, Colorado. It requires a full-sun to light afternoon shade location in average to waterwise, well-drained soil. Once established it is a drought-tolerant, low-maintenance plant. Attractive in combination with other succulents, it’s a lovely specimen succulent that makes a nice groundcover or addition to a rock garden with protection in colder zones. Plant in a pot or trough, and keep it close to enjoy the blooms. The Bergeranthus plant family is named for Alwin Berger, a German botanist from the late 1800s-early 1900s who dedicated his career to succulent plants, especially agaves and cacti.
