Our home is at 7000' and in the NM desert. I planted this in an area receiving morning sun and afternoon shade, but also hot and with low water. After a slow couple of years, I now have a lovely clump of green through the spring and early summer, with liberal orange blooms starting early in September. I've just ordered more to fill in the space that will be left when I take out some giant sage that thrives but does not fit the garden design. This clump thrives in a difficult space and gives me color as the rest of the garden is fading. And the bees and hummingbirds love it.

Hardy in Zone 5, stays green through winter. After a couple of seasons, this plant is aggressively overtaking the flowerbed it was planted in; even crowding out some pernicious/annoying mint in the process. 2+ feet of landscape fabric does not appear to present an effective barrier to spreading roots. It is pretty when blooming, but mine only blooms for a few weeks in mid-summer; the rest of the season it seems to focus its energies towards Global Domination. If you do plant this, treat it as near to Yarrow or Myrtle Spurge on the aggressiveness scale. Luckily it only seems to spread via roots, though.

This did not survive for me either, so I can't rate on it's beauty. I have one left but it's thin and struggling it has not spread. Maybe it will flourish next year!

About Me Getting Started
I've purchased this plant during 2 different seasons and planted it in 2 different areas. All 5 plants died. These plants also did not arrive in very good shape during either purchase.

Fabulous Blooming, performing plant!
from Chico Ca.
I have had this plant growing for years now in my gardens. It gets regular watering and thrives. Contrary to the description, I have a couple of areas where this plant gets searing heat and sun most of the day, and it performs beautifully, blooming for about 4 months. I have some at the back of my cactus garden, which is in front of a heat radiating stucco wall on the west side of my house, and it thrives on a drip line of regular watering. I actually have to hack it back away from my cactus area, that it spreads into.

I have used this in a berm and on the edge of a raised garden. It comes back bigger aND more beautiful each year. My favorite thing about it is that the hummingbirds love it!

Slow growing & didn't bloom first year
from Monument CO
Planted in early to mid May. Unfortunately didn't bloom this summer. However we live at approximately 7000' (short growing season) and this year we had an incredible amount of rain which wa unusual. We'll see what happens this summer. I'm optimistic it will be beautiful.

I purchased just three small plants and planted them in a large pot to see if the hummingbirds were attracted to them. The humming birds came and I was sorry I didn't purchase more.

I put zauschneria garrettii in hanging pots near my deck so I can sit on my deck and watch the humming birds go the the bright orange flowers on these plants.
