Details

Standing Ovation Little Bluestem Grass (Schizachyrium scoparium 'Standing Ovation' PP25,202) is a new selection of our native Little Bluestem grass. Our 2018 Plant of The Year, 'Standing Ovation' was selected for its strong upright growth habit, blue summer foliage, and outstanding reddish fall color. It stands up well to rain, wind, and snow and the stems won't bend over, giving the grass a tidy appearance, especially in the fall and winter months when it provides off-season beauty. Recommended companion plants include Prairie Coneflower (Ratibida), Purple Coneflower (Echinacea) and native ornamental grasses like Bouteloua 'Blonde Ambition'.

Comments about High Country Gardens Schizachyrium scoparium Standing Ovation:

This is a beautiful plant from mid-summer through the winter until I cut it down for it's new growth. I've had it 3-4 years in my native, xeric garden and l loved it from the first fall when it turned pink-red. I transplanted it to another location last year to give it more prominence and had no problem. It is drought resistant and hardy. I really like it.

      Q & A

      Suggested Companion Plants:

      USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

      • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
      • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
