Dog Tuff™ Grass Plugs

Dog Tuff™ Grass (Cynodon ‘PWIN04S’) is an amazing, highly drought-resistant lawn grass perfect for high traffic and play areas. It has excellent durability in yards with dogs and is resistant to yellowing from dog urine. Once established, this warm-season grass is highly weed resistant, deep-rooted and provides a soft, cushioned feel for bare feet. It only grows 2 ½-4 inches high, so you need not mow it unless you prefer a manicured look. 2015 Green Thumb Award Winner.

USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

  • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
  • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).

Details

Dog Tuff® Grass (Cynodon ‘PWIN04S’) is a homeowner’s dream come true. This deep-rooted, dense, low-growing turf grass is very drought resistant (xeric> and provides a tough, durable lawn. It is ideal for kids’ play and stands up to dog traffic and dog urine with little or no damage. 2015 Green Thumb Award Winner

Typically within one season, Dog Tuff® Grass fills into a thick, luxurious lawn, spreading by stolons that root deep into the ground. This grass is considered sterile, so it doesn't spread by seed. Because Dog Tuff® Grass only grows to 2 ½-4 inches tall, you need not mow it. (If it grows taller than 4", it's probably receiving too much water.) Without mowing, Dog Tuff ™ grows in gentle mounds. If you prefer a manicured look, you can mow about once a week, but be careful to only mow ½ inch of growth at a time or you will scalp the lawn, causing it to go brown. Don't cut the grass short before winter; instead mow it low in early spring to reinvigorate it.

You'll need to water this warm-season grass frequently to get it established. Water the area lightly 2-3 times a day for a week, about once a day the second week and every other day or so by the third week. After the second or third year, the grass only needs to be watered once every week or two, ½ - 1” of irrigation at a time, so the water penetrates deeply into the roots.

A flat covers 70 sq. ft. when planted on 1 ft x 1 ft. centers. Questions? Review our Lawn Replacement Instructions for more information. A detailed planting and maintenance instruction sheet is provided with each order.

Customer Testimonial:"Just wanted to let you know that we ordered your "Dog Tuff" turf this spring for our house in central Denver and couldn't be happier with the results! We have a dog care business out of our house and can have up to 8-9 dogs staying on a busy weekend so normal blue grass has no chance in our back yard. Last year we re-sodded the back yard with blue grass and within a month it was history. This summer we have marveled and how strong and "tuff" even the new grass plugs are and how fast it grew! Now we have a beautiful grass area for the dogs and us! Best landscaping investment we have made! Thank you for giving us a much better solution to the turf problem!" - Sonya R., Denver, CO
