Description

Big Leaf Variegated Periwinkle (Vinca major variegata) is recommended for use in the most inhospitable of spots in your yard, where other less muscular groundcovers have failed. A large-leafed evergreen, Vinca grows equally well in full sun or deep shade. The quarter-sized flowers appear in late spring. Excellent for sloped areas. Don’t plant in coastal CA where it is invasive. Javelina resistant. 8" x 36" wide.

Planting & Care

Vinca (Vinca) is a genus of plants native to the Old World and Asia. Annual Vinca (formerly known as Vinca rosea) is now considered to be in a separate genus.

Preferred growing conditions:

  • Plant Vinca minor in compost-enriched, acidic loam. Vinca major will grow in any soil type including clay. Both are best positioned in full to partial-shade locations.
  • Mulch with common mulch materials in dry Western climates. Leave un-mulched in moister Eastern climates.
  • Water regularly during the first growing season to establish the plant. Vinca minor appreciates regular irrigation in arid climates. Vinca major is xeric and only needs occasional deep watering. Rainfall is generally sufficient for both species in moist Eastern climates.
  • Deadheading the plants is not necessary.
  • Fertilize Vinca minor lightly in the fall with a half-and-half mix of Yum Yum Mix and good-quality compost. Supplement that with the addition of soil sulfur if the foliage is looking chlorotic (yellow). Vinca major needs only a light fall application of Yum Yum Mix or nothing at all if growing well.

Special comments:

  • Vinca major is an indestructible evergreen groundcover that is invaluable for planting in dry shade under trees. But it is an aggressive grower that should not be planted with other small growing perennials as it will smother them. It is best placed under larger growing shrubs and trees.

"I bought this last year Not knowing much about it. It was small and cute so I put it in a couple of planters with other flowers. Here are some things you need to know. It starts small and may not bloom the first year. I live in the PNW and it does get cold here. It loves this environment. It didn't stop growing, once it spilled over and touched the ground, it started forming roots in the end. I thought it was pretty neat tbh. This year I lopped off the ends to a manageable length and just let it go. The purple flowers are beautiful little pops of color throughout the green and white foliage. However, this is why I stated to read the above description. It will take over your container so like it says, PLANT IT ALONE! lol. I took over the roots of some of my plants, it was totally my fault. **ALSO** If you do not want this to take over your flower beds or yards, do NOT plant them in the ground! A sweet elderly lady did this about 3 years ago, although it is a beautiful plant it took her yard over! It took me and a few friend 3 days to pull it all up so that she could actually enjoy her yard. Let me tell you, it was a chore! This plant is easy to maintain, I really don't have to think twice about it other than separating it from my others and making sure it doesn't root when it reaches the grground. No fertilizing here, just water it when it needs it and admire it. I hope my information helps. But really unless you want a Vinca covered yard, keep it in the container :)"

"Vinca aka periwinkle is one of my all time favorite plants! Attractive leaves, evergreen, versatile AND adorable, long lasting flowers that look like pinwheels?! Yes, please! :) Although our pets have never bothered it, vinca is said to be toxic to pets, so plant with discretion. We have vinca at both of our properties and it thrives with NO care (after initial watering period of 4-8 weeks upon transplanting). When we want to increase the size of a vinca planting, we just pour a handful of dirt on a tendril a few inches from the tip, and maybe put a few pieces of gravel or a small rock on the stem to anchor it. As long as it has frequent water and it's the growing season, within a few weeks a new plant will form. This new plant will create a set of its own tendrils. It can be cut from the parent plant and transplanted, or will add to the existing mat of VERY EFFECTIVE GROUNDCOVER Yes, vinca is exceptional at blocking out light-hungry weeds. Yet in our experience it hasn't choked the life out of existing trees, etc, because it's not that much of a climber. It's almost like a vine that travels horizontally and doesn't have root ""claws"" for climbing. And it doesn't have a spiraling growth pattern for growing up a vertical support. Which means that it won't climb. We have it planted at the bottom of a huge trumpet vine on one of our properties. So the vinca makes its pretty purple-blue pinwheels on the ground and the trumpet vine with its glorious red hummingbird attracting flowers climbs the wooden fence. They look beautiful together and cool the area We are in high desert (5000+ feet elevation), 14 inches precipitation a year, low humidity, strong winds, zone 7 with summer flash floods. The vinca anchors our sandy soil and keeps our red dirt from washing or blowing away. I have grown vinca equally well in western Montana and in humid Pacific Northwest. We also appreciate that it is something that thrives here that doesn't have thorns or cause allergies"
