'Shenandoah' is a selection of our native prairie switch grass grown for its burgundy colored foliage and pinkish flower spikes. This grass has especially nice fall color with the grass blades tinted with red and orange. Drought resistant/drought tolerant plant (xeric).
4-5' tall x 18" wide (division propagated). This beautiful selection of Switch Grass is valued for its red foliage. By mid-summer, the grass blades are colored green and tipped with red. In the fall the color intensifies as the entire plant turns a striking blend of reds and oranges. Panicum virgatum 'Shenandoah' appreciates regular deep watering but will survive dry summers as it is moderately xeric.
Flat of 9 plants will cover 14 square feet when planted together

Amazing Grass
"I planted this in the spring of 2025. It must have loved its location as it grew very large immediately. I do use Plant Success Organics Granular Mycorrhizae Root Inoculant & water the plants in with a mixture of seaweed and Superthrive. First two picture early fall 2025 & the next three spring 2026."

Beautiful plant and keeps getting better!
"I now have six of these and am grateful to my sister for recommending them. This picture is of approximately two year old plants. The new ones have settled in nicely and I planted them to catch the afternoon sun."

Fingers crossed
"I ordered 2 plants to replace the 2 the donkey ate last year. These new plants were tiny, tiny. The eaten ones had been considerably larger when planted. I followed the instructions and soaked in Thrive solution. I've seen no sign of growth but the 2-3 green leaves are still hanging on."

Hopeful start
"I will try to upload a photo of my switchgrass. It is about 9 months old and looking good. The deer have eaten everything around it, but have left it alone. I plan to get some more this fall to expand the planting. #sweepstakes"

A fantastic switch grass !
"Last summer I got rid of all the grass in my front yard and replaced it with low water plants. I included a few different ornamental grasses, but the Shenandoah switch grass is the biggest. So far it's doing what I hoped: filling a 3x3x3 space with lovely grass and seedheads. I can't wait till fall when to see their celebrated copper colors. #sweepstakes"

They have started growing!
"I wanted to try this grass, as I am trying to introduce as many natives as possible into our landscape. I have two in each of two raised beds. They were fairly small (and dry) when they arrived, after a long trip through the US postal service to the east coast, but I got them in the ground immediately, and they have definitely started growing. I even see some of the red coloring. I'm really looking forward to these getting big and bushy over time and am confident that they will."
— EmilyGardens (5/5)
did not comeback
"I planted this infant of my fence hoping to have it come back year after year. It did not come ack this year. It didn't make it one year. I was very disappointed"

I wouldn't buy again
"I purchased similar decorative grasses at a local nursery and they are doing much better than the mail order plants and were a fraction of the cost."
— John (3/5)
Love this low-water, colorful, easy to grow grass!
"Shenandoah Switch Grass is beautiful and easy to grow. I put in a few small plants in the fall, in the spring I was unsure if they would come up . . . a little slow going. But sure enough, they spring when they're ready and then get full and beautiful. Green During the summer, then flowy and beautiful foliage in the winter. I put in 10 more as a border along my driveway."
— K-Lace (5/5)
Definately a keeper
"I believe in using native grasses over foreign cultivars. The developing flower spikes with their purple-red and orange colors are striking and a good compliment to the Arizona Red Gaillardia that fronts it. I also like its vertical structure and the fact it grew rapidly in just one summer. Best luck I've had with grasses yet."
