Description

48-60” tall x 12-18” wide. Stanleya pinnata (Prince's Plume) is an easy-to-identify native plant in the arid landscapes of the American West and Southwest. In summer, gray-green foliage is topped by 5-6" spikes of bright, bold yellow. Foliage narrows and becomes lanceolate as it grows further up the flowering spikes. Flowers have a bottle-brush look, with elongated stamens and recurved sepals, or petals that form a semi-open tube. Flowers open from the bottom of the spike upward. Depending on weather, the flowering spikes of ‘Prince’s Plume’ can last for several weeks up to a couple months. When dry they should be cut at the base and removed. ‘Prince’s Plume’ is well suited to xeriscapes, in arid, semi-desert conditions of the west and southwest. It can be used in wetter climates, if placed in sheltered or elevated rock gardens to ensure that this native desert perennial does not suffer from too much moisture. Plant in full sun in poor to average soil.

Exceeded our expectations

"Planted this in amended heavy clay in Western Colorado in late fall. The picture was taken the following spring, roughly seven months after planting. Did not expect this result in the first spring. Amendments included locally sourced compost, crushed basalt fines, azomite, and a little organic fertilizer. I watered it at planting and a couple times during an unusually dry winter. No supplemental water this spring, as the clay here under bark mulch holds water all season. This plant grows in the canyons here without any supplemental water. Although the foliage on our specimen is superior to those we see in the wild here. Pollinators, including hummingbirds, visit the flowers regularly."

A little early to tell. . .

"but I think these plants will thrive. They began their shipping journey over a holiday weekend with no mail delivery service and some slower than anticipated transit. They arrived with a bit of yellowing, droopy leaves but planted as instructed and hoped for the best. At two months now, they are filling out, adding some height and looking a bit healthier. Not sure if I will see flowers this year, but they seem to be taking root in their new location just fine."

"I got this Prince's Plume from HCG as a small potted plant. It arrived very healthy at a very good time of year (any later and it would have been too hot), just moist for shipping but not over- or under-done. A month and a half later in my border, it is THRIVING. It took hold right away and is going forward well. Too young to bloom, but I expected that. I got 2 other different native plants at the same time and it's the same with them. Very happy with my purchase. So happy to be able to find natives, and in particular, desert natives that are not cactus!"
