Sporobolus heterolepis (Prairie Dropseed Grass) is considered to be one of our most ornamental native species. It has graceful, fine-textured foliage with see-through fall seed heads. An excellent performer in a wide range of conditions and soil types.
Sporobolus heterolepis (Prairie Dropseed Grass) is widely considered to be one of our finest native grass species. Wide ranging in nature, it's found across nearly two thirds of the US. Well adapted to a wide variety of growing conditions and soil types (including clay), the fine textured grass blades make this clumping grass exceeding graceful and in constant motion with even the slightest breeze. The showy see-through flowering seed heads appear in late summer and hold beautifully through the winter. And seed-eating songbirds seek out this grass for food. Sporobolus also has golden fall color; an outstanding grass with four seasons of ornamental interest. Plant with other prairie wildflowers like Prairie Sage (Salvia azurea), Goldenrod (Solidago), Blazing Star (Liatris) and Little Blue Stem (Schizachrium).

As soon as your order is placed you will receive a confirmation email. You will receive a second email the day your order ships telling you how it has been sent. Some perennials are shipped as potted plants, some as perennial roots packed in peat. The ‘Plant Information’ section describes how that item will ship. All perennials and fall-planted bulbs are packaged to withstand shipping and are fully-guaranteed. Please open upon receipt and follow the instructions included.
Perennials and fall-planted bulbs are shipped at the proper planting time for your Growing Zone. Perennial and fall-planted bulb orders will arrive separately from seeds. Arrived Dormant. Hoping for growth
"I am hoping that our late spring means the plants are growing roots and when it warms, they will become green and provide a grassy, green cover for an obnoxious hillside. This will be a meadow area and already the tree swallows are using the many bird houses and fliting around the area."
— LO (4/5)
Prairie Dropseed
"This plant has proven drought tolerant and generally tough. I look forward to it growing into the beautiful plant I know it tone."
