Solidago Wichita Mountains (Golden Torch Goldenrod) is an unidentified species of Goldenrod originally collected from the Wichita Mts. Of southwestern Oklahoma. An upright growing selection with bottle brush shaped flower spikes, it is unsurpassed for its beauty and ability to attract bees and butterflies. Drought resistant/drought tolerant plant (xeric).
"Planted these last fall and they have grown amazingly well. They were a bit floppy this year with the early spring (as many of my plants were) , but I will remember to pinch them all back a bit in late spring next year to make a bushier plant. They didn’t bloom until early October, probably three weeks after Fireworks Solidago-but they are worth the wait. Gorgeous color for fall."

yes , I would buy this product again
"Plants arrived in healthy condition and planted late last summer. They emerged this spring and are putting on buds now . Looking forward to the flowering display and pollinator action."
— MM (5/5)
I love these
"They came in excellent shape. I wanted the Wichita variety because the Wichita Mountains are just 3 miles north of my front door. They started sprouting new shoots in just a couple of weeks."
— Wichita (5/5)
Reliably tough
"This plant holds up well to our harsh triple digit summer weather and is relatively drought tolerant. Pollinators already seem interested in this young plant so I'm looking forward to next spring with lots more blooms to draw them in! Very sturdy and nice looking! I highly reccommend!"
— Miss H. (5/5)
Small scale goldenrod
"I needed a small goldenrod to fit in with other pollinator plants. It fits just right, and is blooming well."
— Salgal (5/5)
Butterfly Heaven!
"I have a monarch waystation in my backyard and planted this goldenrod to help nourish my visiting Monarchs and butterflies. I love the way it holds itself up so proudly and the flowers will be gorgeous. The pollinators will come once it blooms. . . and they will enjoy this plant. I was very pleased that High Country Gardens offered it. It arrived healthy and vigorous and is thriving in the sun. I am hoping to plant another soon. I would recommend this plant to anyone with a pollinator garden or who grows in a warm climate and loves yellow flowers."
— Miss H. (5/5)
Pollinator Invitation
"I planted this for my pollinators… but honestly… it attracts me too. I think this is a lovely little plant."
— Miss H. (5/5)
Pollinator Palooza
"Combines well with 'Desert Soltice' Agastache. Both loved by pollinators."
— JS (5/5)
Holding on
"The weather has been challenging to new plants this year but both were doing well until the rabbit ate one. With the drought and heat more wildlife has been making it way to my yard to try to find food."
— Vickie (5/5)
Growing nicely
"Growing well. No blooms yet but want it to bloom later. Looks healthy. Seems happy in a spot that isn't as dry as other places."
Solidago sp. Wichita Mountains is a great new native introduction found in the rugged Wichita Mountains of southwestern OK by nurseryman Steve Bieberich of Sunshine Nursery. True to its origins, Golden Torch Goldenrod is extremely heat-tolerant and is a much more xeric species than the other Solidago. Of course, the butterflies flock to it in great numbers. Plant with other prairie species like Salvia pitcheri 'Grandiflora' and 'The Blues' Little Bluestem grass (Schizachyrium). (seed propagated) Contrary to popular belief, Solidago doesn't cause allergies; its pollen is sticky, not windblown, and is moved from plant to plant by bees.
Planting & Care
Growing Solidago (Goldenrod)
This is a group of summer/fall blooming native wildflowers that are easy-to-grow and provide ample nectar for butterflies and bees. Goldenrods are resistant to browsing rabbits and deer. Contrary to popular belief, these perennials DON'T cause allergies; their pollen is sticky, not windblown, and is moved from plant to plant by bees.
They grow easily in all types of soil including clay.
Goldenrod benefits from mulching in hot, dry climates and is amenable to most common types of mulch, including crushed gravel in xeriscapes.
After their second growing season, Solidago only requires deep but infrequent watering.
Plant in full, hot sun.
Just a few handfuls of compost and Yum Yum Mix in the planting hole is enough. It’s not necessary to plant into a rich, highly amended soil.
