Golden Fleece is a small growing goldenrod with sprays of arching golden-yellow flower spikes in late summer. A strong but compact plant, it is a great companion planted in front of taller, late blooming perennials. Drought resistant/drought tolerant plant (xeric).
15" tall x 24" wide (cutting propagated). This is a superb Dwarf Goldenrod, recently introduced by Dr. Richard Lightly, former director of the Mt. Cuba Center for the Study of Piedmont Flora in Delaware. The sturdy, arching golden-yellow flower stems are profuse and make an eye-catching display wherever they are planted. Pictured here with Aster 'Purple Dome' in the background. Like all of the Goldenrods, "Golden Fleece" is very easy to grow in average garden conditions. Contrary to popular belief, Solidago doesn't cause allergies; its pollen is sticky, not windblown, and is moved from plant to plant by bees.
Planting & Care
Growing Solidago (Goldenrod)
This is a group of summer/fall blooming native wildflowers that are easy-to-grow and provide ample nectar for butterflies and bees. Goldenrods are resistant to browsing rabbits and deer. Contrary to popular belief, these perennials DON'T cause allergies; their pollen is sticky, not windblown, and is moved from plant to plant by bees.
They grow easily in all types of soil including clay.
Goldenrod benefits from mulching in hot, dry climates and is amenable to most common types of mulch, including crushed gravel in xeriscapes.
After their second growing season, Solidago only requires deep but infrequent watering.
Plant in full, hot sun.
Just a few handfuls of compost and Yum Yum Mix in the planting hole is enough. It’s not necessary to plant into a rich, highly amended soil.

Lovely Flowers But MUCH Larger then Expected
"I wanted to give 5 stars, but the plants in the second year are absolutely too tall - NOT dwarf. The flowers are beautiful and long-lasting (last year's at least) and the deer/rabbits have left them alone. They are leggy (not compact) and falling all over this second season. I will have to replace with something shorter and more compact. In photo - lacrosse stick is 3 feet 6 inches."

I have bought this product again and again!
"I bought the first plant years ago, and it has grown into a large and beautiful plant with time. This led me to purchase more for a different bed. I love the color of all of them. They are hardy and become stronger and larger every year! Great plant!"

Awesome!
"I was nervous about ordering plants online. I wasn't sure how they would arrive. But, I wanted several varieties of goldenrod for my pollinators area of our property. These arrived perfect!! So healthy and lush!! They have performed and thrived better than ones I purchased locally!!! I'm so pleased!! #sweepstakes"

Healthy plant
"I put this goldenrod in a blank space in my border. Nature abhors a vacuum, and so do I. It will bloom at a time that the neighboring plants are not in bloom. I once dug some wild goldenrod from the ditch. I learned the hard way that that goldenrod needs some brome grass as competition. I expect this one will behave itself. I always get good plants fro High Country Gardens."

Can't wait for it to bloom
"This plant looks like blooming fireworks. That's what was attractive about it. It also says that it's a short variety so I'm hoping that it is cuz I planted it in the front. It's not in bloom yet, but I got it cuz it's supposed to be a pollinator magnet. Have high hopes for this petite solidago."

Definitely not dwarf
"Bought two plants in Spring 2021, but didn't have a chance to plant until the cool-down in September 2021. (They summered fine in pots in partial shade. ) Over-wintered great, and excellent growth this spring. Unfortunately, they are now topping out at about 4 feet tall. Not as tall as the goldenrod I already grow -- but definitely not a 15-inch dwarf! One plant is growing with moderate water and one with low water. Both tall -- although the moderate water is unsurprisingly lusher. Pleased with the plants themselves -- if I had wanted taller plants, this would be a 5-star rating. My 3-star rating is splitting the difference on the inaccurate description (or mistaken labeling). I will be moving them after bloom to locations more suited to their majestic height."

This Solidago was a Super Solid Purchase a year ago!
"Purchased 2 plants last year, BOTH THRIVED! This Spring they both grew back, 4 plants now from each one. So after 1 year I now have 8 plants! Beautiful, very beneficial plant. So glad I purchased 2 last year to reduce shipping cost. Thanks very much."

Not the size I ordered
"I ordered the Dwarf Goldenrod (Golden Fleece) last fall. It came up this summer just fine. Unfortunately, it is 4 feet tall instead of 15"" so does not fit in the space for which I bought it. I see there is another review stating the same problem. I did speak with customer service and was offered a couple of options to resolve the problem. Seems like there may have been a mis-labeling problem on the plant?"
