This rare native species found only in a few areas of the Midwest is a must for brightening the late summer garden. Its scarlet-red flowers are extremely showy and will attract hummingbirds eager to feed from the nectar-rich blossoms. Plant in enriched, well-drained sandy or loam soils and irrigate regularly if conditions are dry. A wonderful flowering companion for Agastache 'Black Adder'.

Planting & Care
Silene (Campion or Catchfly) - a large genus of primarily Northern Hemisphere wildflowers that includes a wide range of types from tiny rock garden species to large, showy prairie plants and meadow dwellers. Some tend to be short lived.
Preferred growing conditions
Plant in compost enriched garden loam. Avoid clay soils. Silene prefers to be planted in a full to partial sun locations.
Mulch with common mulching materials except in moisture Eastern climates where plants should remain un-mulched.
Irrigate regularly the first growing season to establish the plants. They grow well in dry to moderately moist soil conditions and should be given weekly supplemental irrigation in arid Western climates. Rainfall is generally sufficient in moister eastern climates.
Deadheading will help to keep the plants blooming longer into the summer.
Fertilize lightly in the fall with a half and half blend of Yum Yum Mix and good quality compost.
Special comments
Leave the plants standing over the winter months and cut back in early to mid-spring.
Lychnis don't need to be divided.
Some species are short lived and may need replacement after the third growing season.

50/50
"I ordered 4 and one came damaged and hasn't grown. One other started but has broken it's stem and didn't make it. One of them is growing well and actually flowered a few weeks ago. The fourth is growing well but not as big as the third. I expect to see blooms soon. The one that bloomed was pretty and I look forward to seeing it get bigger in the years to come."

Beautiful red flowers
"Plant arrived in good condition and flowered nicely. However, it seems to be declining. It might have been our erratic weather this summer. I hope it lives."
— Conwegian (4/5)
Wewaker than I thought
"For a flower that's supposed to be fairly hardy, these plants seem to have extremely slow growth. Perhaps it's still early in the season, but they don't seem to be thriving. I usually have a bit of a green thumb, so the lack of performance with these plants puzzles me."
— Steve L. (3/5)
Very Happy
"When I first received the taproots, I thought that they would never amount to anything. I was wrong. Within a short time of planting them in individual pots and putting them in a sunny spot in my garden, they came to life and are thriving."
— Gardener L. (5/5)
A perperennial that is under used. Unique but requires space
"I would use this in a mixed bed. It had a long bloom period."
— Bird L. (4/5)
Eye Catcher
"This Silene Regia is rare in Maryland. It was s;ow to have a presence, it took three years, but this year strollers stop to admire the five planted near the roadway and in front of the Meta sequoia. The few seeds saved from last year have yet to appear. The attached photos tell the story better."
— RAMMd (4/5)
slow starter, beautiful plant
"I planted one of these six years ago. I found it to be a slow starter, but once it was established, it grew steadily year after year. Even though here in WY is on the very edge of it's zone suitability, the plant has thrived, reaching about 5' tall and covered with blooms. Hummingbirds aren't common here, but a couple of them always manage to find it."
— Na (5/5)
Quality has always been great
"We have been ordering for many yrs from your catalog and if there was ever a problem it was taken care of keep up good work Gene"
