Description
Silene chalcedonica (Maltese Cross) is an herbaceous perennial with lush green foliage topped by round clusters of scarlet-orange flowers. Easy to grow and long-lived, it adds bold splashes of color through the garden. Recipient of the Royal Horticultural Society Award of Garden Merit, it is a low-maintenance perennial with a long season of interest. Butterflies flock to the flowers, as do bees and hummingbirds. Deer and rabbits stay away. Plant Maltese Cross in a sunny location (afternoon shade is tolerated) in average, well-draining soil with moderate to moist moisture. Once established, it is somewhat more drought tolerant. Native to Eurasia, it was brought to the American colonies in the early 1800s. Thomas Jefferson planted it in an oval bed in Monticello in 1807 as documented in his Garden Book. The rest is history!

"I had a wetter area, which i think this plant might need. It did ok last year for a 1st year plant, being small with a few flowers, and it came back this year, which makes it a winner in my book."
Great addition to my front bed
"These are narrow enough to be tucked in anywhere, and the blooms add a bright pop of color above the foliage. The flowers lean toward orange-red vs. crimson, so they blend really nicely with yellow bloomers and Shasta daisies. The plants arrived with really deep roots, but sadly, some also had with bent and broken stalks. So I pruned them back before planting and was delighted to see new stalks emerging almost immediately. Now, all of them are topped by bright blooms that sway gently in the breeze. Really a nice addition, and I'll definitely be ordering more."
