Blooming in mid-spring, the shrubby Desert Peach (Prunus andersonii) perfumes the garden with its showy pink flowers, attracting bees and butterflies. Small oval leaves occur in clusters along the branches. The flowers are followed by numerous dime-sized peaches that are attractive to birds and wildlife, though not edible for humans. Desert Peach is a rarely grown, but very desirable, long-lived Western native shrub for the xeric garden.

Desert Peach

"The soil was scattered about the package,"

Kevin H. (3/5)

Two of three still alive

"These three arrived small and dry, were recovering well and then were gnawed by an herbivorous dog. One was not able to recover from that. The other two are putting out new leaves and appear happy. I will know more about them after a winter. I changed the planting location from where I originally intended after learning that they are thicket forming and that individual trunks in the wild rarely exceed seven years. I am hopeful for their future and will know more in a year or so."

Tamara (3/5)

Slow grower at 7500'

"I planted the desert peach in 2012. I am at 7500' in Colorado and am borderline zone 4/5 depending on the winter and average 10-12"" of water per year. The shrub is now ~2' tall and had multiple blooms for the first time last summer. I'm hoping it is finally well-established and will grow more quickly now. The good news is that it has survived in a very harsh environment. I've grown many other shrubs from HCG e. g. , Lewis Mock Orange that have thrived."
