How do we use your location?
Knowing your location helps us recommend plants that will thrive in your climate, based on your Growing Zone.
Phlox x 'Violet Pinwheels' is an early blooming evergreen perennial, with blooms lasting for up to 6 weeks. Requiring a full sun location and average soil, it needs moderate water to establish; thereafter it is a hardy, waterwise plant. Perfect for rock gardens or slopes where it can help stabilize soil, it covers ground beautifully. Attractive to hummingbirds, bees, and butterflies it provides much-needed early food sources for pollinators. A perfect pairing to create a carpet of color beneath spring blooming bulbs such as Crocus, Tulips, Daffodils, and Snowdrops. This North American native hybrid was developed by Dr. Jim Ault at Chicago Botanic Garden as a cross between Phlox bifida, or Sand Phlox, and Phlox kelseyi, a mat-forming western Phlox. This Phlox is lower-growing and slower to spread compared to classic Creeping Phlox varieties such as ‘Purple Beauty’ or ‘Blue Emerald’.

"Like these a good bit, very early blooms, nice color. I haven't really put them to the test of not watering them yet, nor do I know how big they'll get. I will say I have some in a south facing rock garden that dries out super fast, a north facing rock garden in part shade that stays cool and moist longer, and a parking strip that the neighbors sprinklers constantly keeps soaking wet in full sun. They seem to be doing good in each spot, so it seems to be fairly adaptable to different conditions."
"This phlox creates a stunning, intense, deep purple carpet, and blooms a very long time. It spreads somewhat slowly — a 4"" pot (purchased elsewhere) is now a 12"" plant 6 years later. I've had a hard time finding it at nurseries so I'm happy to see HCG offer it."
