Description

12-24" tall x 12-18" wide (cutting propagated). This outstanding compact cultivar of the New England Aster is notable for its symmetrical mounding habit and luscious deep lavender-purple flowers. Easy to grow in any decent soil and not bothered by mildew, I like to plant it with Solidago 'Golden Fleece' and Agastache cana for a beautiful flowering grouping in early fall. Divide in spring every 3rd year to keep it vigorous.

Growing Aster (Aster)
These are late summer/fall blooming native wildflowers that are easy-to-grow and provide an ample late season nectar supply for butterflies and bees. As such, they are an indispensible perennial for late season color and for feeding migrating Monarchs. Asters are resistant to browsing rabbits.

  • They grow well in most any type of soil including clay.
  • Mulch with common mulching materials as well as gravel when planted in a xeriscape.
  • Most do well with regular irrigation to keep the soil moderately moist. Some species are more xeric.
  • Plant in full sun or part sun. Some varieties will stretch in too much shade
  • Just a few handfuls of compost and Yum Yum Mix in the planting hole is enough. Don't plant into a rich, highly amended soil.
  • Species that spread to form wide growing clumps can be divided in mid-spring.
  • Fertilize in the fall with Yum Yum Mix and good quality compost.
  • Deadheading is not necessary, but will reduce re-seeding of seed-grown varieties.
  • Leave standing over the winter months and cut back hard to 1 to 2" above the ground.
  • If foliage becomes affected with mildew at the end of the growing season, cut back to the ground and remove the leaves/stems to the compost pile or trash.

"This aster has done very well in the dry climate of North Idaho. It is very tough and blooms consistently every year. "This little guy came in a small pot and although it didn't get planted right away, it's doing really well. It doesn't have flowers yet (it will in the fall) but I think it's hsppy and content where it git planted which is more in the back of my flower bed. Beautiful in thick Indiana clay

"Arrived as a tiny sprout just 2 inches in diameter but with deep healthy roots - I would not have believed that this would grow into a full 18"" diameter dome of dense gorgeous purple flowers in one season especially in my thick clay soil. You can see them from 10 houses down, bigger and fuller than all my neighbors' grocery store mums."

"I live in North Central Florida, and all (only 3 so far) of my asters are blooming NOW. . . May 12, 2015, they started to bloom about a week ago!!! These plants bloomed last Fall for the first time. Very healthy plants, and evergreen! I would say my plants are less than a year old, I am surprised they are blooming now."

bright autumn color

"This adds bright color in the fall. It is a favorite of butterflies and bees. A last meal before winter setting in. I am looking for the bright pink aster I have seen. Hope that is available sometime. My area is a zone 4. Though the maps say zone 5, with the cold, dry winds we get in the summer and spring I have found that plants that are zone 5 can't take it."
